I am looking at buying a Maverick 88 for general use. My only problem with it is that I don't like how the ribbed, corn cob forend looks. Is there any other options to replace this, or am I just going to have to deal with it and not complain since the gun is dirt cheap? I read that although most parts are compatible with the mossberg 500, the forend is one thing that is not. Can anyone clear this up for me?

Buy a new Mossberg 500 slide assy from Brownells for ~$35.00 and you can use anyone's aftermarket kit. Otherwise get used to the black corncob.

What KP said^^^

I got lucky with mine. I knew the two owners before me. The last one was my stepson. His cousin before that. The cousin put a Mossberg slide assembly on it. Not sure what the kids idea was, he gave it to me with a SpeedFeed pistol grip, a cracked wooden forearm and a vented barrel sawn off at 24 inches? Anyway, for a little over $100 I picked up an 18.5 inch riot barrel off of GunBroker and a nice wood Mossberg stock from Havlins. So I ended up with a nice little home protector for a little over $100. And on the plus side, it was shot so much by the original cousin that the action is real smooth and slick!

What will a call to Mossberg do for me? I doubt they will want to special order a mav with a different forend because I asked, and if they will do it I'll probably have to pay more. Unless they make them like that still? How long ago did you get yours?

Why don't you make the call and find out?

If you buy one....which you want to do....and then acquire an aftermarket forend, you'll be paying extra anyway. And....you don't know what Mossberg will do until you call.

If you know how to order the forend get it from Brownells. You will get it cheaper and quicker. If you have any doubt call mossberg to get the proper forend. There are 2 different forends that fit the 500.

I am in the process if changing the forearm on my Maverick that I bought about a year ago that came with the one piece forearm. This all started with wanting to shorten the LOP as the original stock is a bit too long and I have the common issue that it grabs on my shirt as I go to shoulder it.

I picked up a Hogue Overmold rear stock from Optics Planet last week and it came with the forearm as well. I did not intend on using the forearm, but after handling it I decided to go ahead a get the replacement action slide and nut. There are two length of action slides. The Hogue set needs the 7 5/8" slide. The cheapest I could find true Mossberg parts was $48 plus $12 for the nut.

It is a pretty pricey process for a $200 gun just for a different forearm, but this will give me the option of changing over to a wood set if I wanted to go with a more traditional look.
