I've been building an AR-15 over the past 5 months (Lack of funding) and am almost complete, just needs the barrel, gas tube, sights & handguard. Now my problem is that i would just like to finish the darn thing....so, I've been considering selling my M70AB2 for funding... I looked at it this way; my wife has a mini-14 and this AR will also be 5.56; compatible ammo... Now, I LOVE AK's, however this AR is set up with a side charging upper and i will use a gas piston system for it as well, so it will be *like* an AK.. Question is; can i actually part ways with this rifle? with the political climate as it is; i'm not sure if I'll ever be able to get another AK down the road, and if i could, at what ridiculous price? ~Stuck between a rock and a hard place~

Keep it!!!

Be patient with the fund issue. It's easier to get gun parts than it is a whole gun in lieu of a price rise due to political scare tactics. It's sad, but true.

Personally,

I would have to be unemployeed and needing to keep the lights on for my family before I would sell. (actually, that has once before happened to me. That particular rifle has since doubled in value in the past 8 years)

I can wait but, I just get antsy. I'm working with $25 a week to spend on the AR... I'm just afraid that I'll regret selling it...

Save what you can each week, when you get what you want, you'll appreciate it more. Then, want what you have! I quit that buy/sell/buy/sell BS a long time ago, I want something today, I get it, next month, I still want it then too !

Why do you want a gas tube and a gas piston? :scrutiny:

I'd dump the piston idea and save $250 which should get you the barrel, handguard and sights. The side charging handle added unnecessary expense as well.

Anyway, of course keep the AK!

I hate the FA/dust covers on AR-15's, they're silly. a side charger just makes more sense- easy functioning, less parts. as for the piston, DI dumps all the hot gases into the bolt carrier, and rapidly heats it up. I'm not just dressing up an AR with magpul furniture, I'm trying to make it very reliable, i'm talking dirt, sand, water, etc. I hate firearms that you have to baby, and be careful with. I'm building an AR because of their versatility and accuracy. even an AR with a piston will be more accurate than an AK (unfortunately), and lighter. also the AR shares the same caliber as my Mini 14, so that definitely helps.

Over a decade ago I sold my Springfield GI 1911, FN FAL and my S&W 629 Classic due to a lay off. I really miss those guns but I needed the money to pay bills. Don't sell a gun for any other reason unless you just plain don't like it.

I have guns I keep and guns i'll trade. The ones I like don't get traded or sold unless my family is going without. The others are up for grabs and help me get into what i want.

Last I checked you don't have to baby a DI AR.

In the Army you do, lol. Unfortunately my first experience with the AR platform was with a piece of junk that rattled and jammed often. This has really never been a problem with an AK. AR's are an aluminum alloy that can be damaged if dropped. As much as the AR has proven itself over the years, it will never hold the title of "Most Reliable".

They're a lil more resilient than you think, but I hear ya. You'll hear about magic Internet rifles that ran like a gazillion rounds without cleaning, which is cool. Now, show me one that does that in the field with gusto. Oh, that's right, there is one.

AK.

On a more serious note, you'd have to slam the AR down to inflict damage enough to cause it to fail, or at best fall on it. If that's the case, stay away from firearms.

Crapping where it eats? What about use in freezing conditions? What if gas tube is damaged? Accurate as the platform is, DI is more fragile than GP, plain and simple. But, before you fanboys start in on me about your precious DI, remember how dirty you innards are after you shoot? Does your AR get used in Siberia or in frigid temperatures that would stop a DI gun? Does that tiny tube really seem more robust than a solid gas piston? Think not.

An AR will hold up falling on soil, but not so forgiving on rocks..big rocks. I'm not falling on them though...lol But the "Dust cover"? seriously? You're afraid to get "dust" in the rifle? for me the DC is useless; it's only good when the rifle isn't being fired. I think it would be interesting to make a steel stamped AR (if even possible).

Keep the AK and save for the AR. You could also do what I did, stopped buying beer, cokes,cigarettes....and sinning of all kinds. Worked for a little while and realized how much money I spent on all useless stuff. As a matter of fact I was responsible for the last recession when I stopped drinking beer. Mow lawns or get a part time job for a couple of months and do not stop buying beer.

I hardly drink and I have no extra free time. My projects are moving VERY slowly, since my only free time is from 12am to 1 am after work (wife & baby are sleeping)
