I just bought a handgun on Gunbroker. I got an e-mail from someone who claims I bought the handgun from them and that they used a "friends" Gunbroker account. I have never had this happen before. I am not comfortable buying from someone who is not registered at Gunbroker and someone who possibly could be a shady character. What would you advise me to do ??? TIA.

Personally, I'd avoid that situation like the plague. If they want to sell on gunbroker they should set up an account. If they don't set up an account then they're afraid for some reason.

Can you contact the owner of the account? Cause the whole thing sounds like some kind of scam.

As in, you buy off somebody on GB. Somebody else emails you saying the deal is actually with him, so send him a cashier's check, etc.

The responsibility is with the account owner. Contacts by anyone else are not valid and the transaction would have no legal protection, or help from Gunbroker .

You must make contact with the account holder to assure the transaction is ligit.

Sounds like an attempt at scamming you out of your money. That sort of thing does go on; occasionally you'll see a dealer post a warning about that very situation on their auctions.

NO. Just..... no. No, no, no. Nope, nuh- uh, no.
Aaannd... still no.

Edited to add: Still going with NO. Don't care, eyes squinched shut NOT LOOKINGfingers in ears NOT LISTENING la la la la NO.

Did the contact come from gunbroker's system, through the seller's account? Or was it an email from nowhere that referenced the auction?

It could be completely honest deal, but the 3rd party should never be contacting you and stating so. Even if the account holder were a consigning the sale, the 3rd party should stay out of it.

I'm a seller on Gunbroker. Occasionally I'll list something for a 3rd party but I disclose it in the description. Any and all communication should come from the Gunbroker registered email account. It may be legit but contact Gunbroker and ask for direction. Did the listing seller mention a third party contact? Do not send any money to the third party unless it is cleared by Gunbroker and the seller.

I would contact the account holder through Gunbroker and ask them if it's legitimate.

Once the auction has closed and you know who the high bidder was, you can, under the right circumstances, send them an e-mail directly. Therefore, I would be careful. I would have some serious reservations about the deal until confirming the validity of the "seller's" claim with the selling account holder.

To expound on my earlier post (which might have seemed silly when I mean to be serious)... this deal is not worth considering, and should not be considered, because one way or another, one of the other participants is being dishonest. If the "real" seller (whoever they may actually be) isn't trying to scam YOU, they're scamming GB... or possibly BOTH. If they cannot get their own GB account (or are no longer allowed to have one?), there is no doubt a good reason. GB trades on its reputation and does not tolerate people with demonstrated track records of dishonesty or dishonor. Please do not assist others in, or be one party to, violations of GB policy. The money you save may be someone else's - but it might be yours, too.

I sent an e-mail to the alleged owner of the gun and the Gunbroker account owner. Told them deal was off !!! Thanks for your advice guys !!!

CYA

Contact GunBroker NOW...Forward all correspondence to GB...

The account holder can now claim you are reneging on the auction...

Correct, if the the seller procedes to do it thru his email and name then you bought the gun. Make sure you cover all bases.
