My calibers aren't anything special, but what I did with them...
I arranged .22 LR, 9x18 Makarov, 9mm Parabellum, .45 ACP, 7.62x25 Tokarev, .38 Special, .45 Colt, .357, .30 Carbine, 7.62x39, .223, 7.62x54R, .30-06 and .50 BMG (casing only) in size order, ascending, right to left.
I videotaped a slow right-to-left pan of the arrangement, then zoomed in on a postcard of a cruise ship, then I cut to a reveal of the actual ship I was aboard for a cruise last year.
The music I used: "Theme from Moulin Rouge" by Percy Faith - it begins with a slow instrumental "climb" which I timed with the camera shot.
I posted the video on a forum for people to discuss cruise vacations - the reactions pretty quickly sorted out the non-shooters from the shooters! :)

12 gauge
9mm

Less is more, IMO. :p Keep it simple - the fewer calibers, and the fewer manuals of arms, the better.
AMEN!!!! I may not want to get as lean as your inventory, but I share your sentiment. My pistols are 9mm Glocks, revolvers with one exception are DA Rugers, shotguns are 12ga, .22's are 10/22's. It may be kinda boring to some, but especially in defensive weapons I want the simplest manual of arms possible.

Trent,
.22, 12 ga., .308 and 9mm/.45 acp are the most available for the immediate future and if you have a realistic stock of these calibers you have your bases covered and an excellent barter commodity if Obama/Fed Chairman Bernanke's programs don't pan out.
Good luck with your 'esoteric' calibers...

Yeah, there's a point to be had there. Back in 2008 I sold off a case of 45ACP to a guy in Florida on Gunbroker for $500 (1000 rounds, my cost was 6.28 per box / 50). I quadrupled my money, and I smiled all the way to the bank. We all remember the great ammo run of '08. No primers for reloading. No common calibers available at ANY cost after awhile. Just ... Nothing.

Some greedy hoarders like me made out pretty damn good. But, I had an excuse, I had an FFL, making money was the whole idea, and I happened to have over 250,000 rounds of ammo on hand when the "great run of '08" started. I waited for months watching prices climb, and finally unloaded it all on gunbroker - spent three weeks doing nothing but shipping ammo, even pulled one of my network engineers and a programmer off my other company to help load & ship boxes.

Anyway, point being, not everyone keeps a "realistic stock."

Those 1,000 rounds of 45 I made a mint off of? When the check showed up I found it was a police department, and smiled a bit less. A lot less, actually. Good business, sure, but the whole ordeal left a bad taste in my mouth. Everyone panicked and I profited.

Back to calibers though;

For a while you couldn't get ANY of the common ammo. Period. Factories were backed up MILLIONS of rounds in production - they couldn't keep up with demand; took almost a year before ammo started flowing freely again.

Suddenly GroupThink kicked in and everyone with a gun became a hoarder overnight.

Yet you could find oddball crap the whole time!

7.62x54R? Sure. 8mm? Sure. 7.62x25? Yup. 270 Winchester? Sure! 300 Shooting Times Westerner? Box right here, partner.

I had an easier time finding 50 BMG than I did 9mm. :)

7.62x39? No. 5.56 NATO? No. 9mm? No. 45 ACP? No.

Once the ammo was gone, the components were gone too. Couldn't find brass. Couldn't find primers. Couldn't find projectiles. I remember having to order SWC bullets for my 45 ACP semi's because it was ALL that I could find, anywhere, at any price. No FMJ, no HP, nothing.

And we screwed ourselves over with our GroupThink. Permanently, probably.

Because the prices have NEVER returned to where they were. Wholesale cost on 45ACP? A damn sight higher than the 6.28 a box I was paying in 2006-7. 7.62x39? Can't get 1,000 rounds of wolf for $59 anymore, can you?

All it took was one event for the smart folks at wolf to say "Look, these dumb Americans are paying $300 for a case of ammo on Gunbroker! And we've been selling it for $40 a case wholesale!"

It doesn't cost them much more to produce it or import it than it did in 2008. Copper spot prices are LOWER right now than it was in the summer of 2008.

Those factories in Russia crank it out 24/7. But now THEY are laughing all the way to the bank.

Anyway I'm going to go get my morning coffee and calm down now.

Here we are in 2012, and ammo prices STILL tick me off.

In General...

It seems as though I know of two types of people in terms of the ammo they purchase/stock/use:

1) the typical sportsman (hunter, shooter, collector) that may have a variety of different calibers in their respective repertoires and the chips (calibers) fall where they may according to what may suite their fancy at any particular moment

2) the prepper (the guy who focuses on a few specific calibers with a defined objective in his mind, perhaps Armageddon )) whereby he may have K's of those said calibers

I'm sure this is a broad overview but it is what have personally observed (though the thread seems to be all over the place ).

-Cheers

Its funny how people refer to .40S&W as "40 caliber" or "40 cal." I've never heard anyone do that with any other caliber, but it seems like most people do it with .40.

Any ideas why?
I'd guess it is because they don't own a S&W there "40cal" is a XD or glock or ruger or ,,,,, I think everyone makes one now so they just dont say 40S&W, don't forget 9mm Luger is just 9mm now

almost forgot my list

long guns- there are 10cal's there

hand guns -there 6cal's there

shotguns- there 3ga's there

yep I'm that lazy :neener:

I think it is a function of two things:
1 - adding the wrong brand name for your autoblaster9000 is confusing
2 - people like round numbers

presented as evidence, "50 cal" and "30 cal" are commonly spoken, much like "40 cal"

I don't understand the point of listing all of the guns that you own on the internet.

That was my first thought too, but if you chose to spend the time searching someone's posts, you could probably get a more specific idea of what they own that way, anyway.

I assume you mean that they shorten it from it's full name?

Some others I hear / use commonly:

".50 cal" (could be muzzleloader or more likely .50 BMG)
"10 mil" / "10 millimeter"
".22" (the ubiquitous .22lr)
".357"
".44"
".38"

Pretty much any shotgun shell:
".410"
"12 gauge"
"20 gauge"
etc, etc, etc.

40 s&w sounds funny when saying out loud. My 40 Smith & Wesson Ruger sounds even worse
