Here's an odd request for y'all. I need a holster for hunting season, but not the usual kind.

A few of the stands I hunt from (there are 7 on the property) during rifle season are a bit...um...cramped. I always carry a pistol with me, and a couple of times last season I could have made an easy shot (less than 20 yards) that I could not have maneuvered a rifle into position for.

I want to strap my pistol to the inside of my calf while **in the stand only.** This would make access quick and easy, while also keeping it away from scraping on anything and spooking the critters.

How would I go about adapting an existing holster? Would a drop-leg holster work? Could it be altered so that something like an old-time sock garter setup could attach the top of it to my calf below the knee, and a strap of some sort at the muzzle end of the holster tie around my ankle?

Or is there something out there that I haven't seen that's already made for this?

Thanks!

Should be able to adapt a drop leg with the aid of velcro straps. Sew some velcro to the leg of your hunting clothing. Check out the military drop holsters for ideas.

My wife as sewn black webbing onto my hunting clothes so various tools may be attached. Typically I use buckles on the webbing and that allows me to attach anything that would normally mount on a belt. Many back packs have a set of buckles for a bedroll on the bottom, it's the same thing my wife sews on.

do as you wish, but some of my gear gets hung from the stand/tree sometimes. I could see myself hanging a gunbelt from the tree or somewhere on the stand while sitting for a long period, but I don't see hanging a hunting size handgun from my ankle.

Thanks for all the replies! That's why I come here - ideas that I didn't think of. I like the chest rig idea, but the shoulder holster isn't quite what I'm looking for - unless it doesn't get in the way of properly seating a rifle for a shot.

Inside the waist band would probably work depending on gun and boots. I did that today with a .380 while sitting in a tree stand. this is what I bought for hunting/hiking this year used a couple times works great easy on and off, and not really at all what you are looking for but just an idea.

I'll agree with others - I think a chest rig is going to be the most easily accessed in the confines of a stand, while not impeding other hunting actions. Actions like wearing a pack, climbing, shouldering a rifle, getting in & out of vehicles. I think it is a great carry system for hunters.

I think a full size handgun in an ankle type rig just won't work. YMMV

The chest holster is the best way that I have found to carry in the field...my 7X leather holster has my 4" 500 in it.
