Chicago proposes bullet tax

Why not charge each gangbanger with a year per shell casing found? As far as medical care goes, plug the wound and lock them up. Why should law abiding citizens pay for the damage caused by these idiots?

Because law abiding citizens are the threat to, and target of, dictatorial lawless government.

"and in other news, the sale of reloading supplies skyrockets after Chicago's new bullet tax"

man, i would hate to see the cost of a 500 round box of .22lr......

I wonder if Chicago will tax suppositories now? Some of them look like bullets.

The statement that legal gunshops in the area are a conduit for crime, prolly doesn't sit well with the owners, no?

I remember in 1960s when was taking an apprenticeship in Chicago, that even then gun shops were fleeing to the outer suburbs. (I did love the old Chicago Gun Center with indoor range on Armitage Ave. as I only lived about a block from there)

So doubt much, if any, ammo is sold in Chitown proper.

The REAL beauty of this is that Chicago will probably spend 7 cents a bullet tracking and administering this new tax ...

Exactly. Criminals are little threat to a corrupt government as long as you play your cards well. If you're doing it right, they're an integral part of your machine.

They should add the tax for everyone in Chicago. See how that goes over...

The notion that all firearm owners that purchase in Chicago should have to subsidize the results of gang banging scumbags really pisses me off.

Chicago native here. The tax is a cook county tax, not a city tax. Under the present laws neither guns nor ammo can be sold within the city limits. Still, it affects city residents who purchase ammo outside the city but within the county.

I'm crushed. Guess I'll KEEP buying all mine in Indiana.

These people never seem to get it. People who buy ammunition in quantity will just go out of the taxed area to buy, and the local economy will suffer while adjoining unaffected counties and states will profit from their goofy tax.

The criminals, on the other hand, don't buy in large enough quantities to do Cook County any good on the extra revenues...if many of them actually buy it rather than stealing it.

And when the authors, sponsors, and endorsers of this fine idea discover that they're not making much money, they'll probably raise the tax to 10 cents.

Back in the 70s, Forsyth County, NC didn't allow beer sales on Sunday, and 25 miles to the east, Guilford County did a booming business selling beer to Forsyth County residents. I remember the "Beer Runs" on Sunday mornings headed for the Guilford County line, and have actually seen small convoys of short bed pickup trucks loaded to the bed rails with cases of beer.

Forsyth finally got it...after about 50 years of trying to control a legal consumer product.

Many counties in TX are still "DRY" with liquor stores lining up on the county lines. Still cannot buy hard liquor on Sundays, Beer and Wine only on Sunday after Noon... Last time I checked I could still get drunk on beer and wine, but what do I know... lol

Its funny in the higher metropolitan places where you cannot buy liquor in one area but drive a few blocks and you can.

Folks, this is a prelude to the future gun control, they will tax shooting out of existance. Guns are worthless if you can't afford ammo. Get ready for more crap like this.

Yep. Been sayin' for years that they'll come after the ammunition. Sarah Brady alluded to that fact early on.

The power to tax is the power to destroy. Don't get caught with your britches around your ankles.

The power to tax can be the power to regulate for legitimate purposes. The State of Tennessee levies a 10 cent ($0.10) tax per box of ammunition, to support the state Wildlife Resources Agency. However, the SCOTUS has long recognized that the power to tax can be used as "the power to destroy" (McCulloch v. Maryland, 17 U.S. (4 Wheat.) 316 (1819)). Gun control groups have proposed taxes on ammunition up to 5000% or fifty times the cost of the ammunition. The proposed 5 cent tax on each cartridge to pay for the costs of gun violence in Chicago is a punitive tax promoted by the very people who are dragging their heels in defiance of the MacDonald ruling aginst the Chicago handgun ban.
