hey guys. i dont want anything super fancy. i just bought a new AR so i have a price range of <$150 i just want a really simple .22lr for plinking that i can slap an old scope that i have laying around on to. preferrably a bolt action. thanks plenty.

Marlin Model 60 for semi-auto, not sure what model their bolt action is, but either way in that price range you'll be more than happy with a Marlin gun (pre-Remington)

Not much available new for $150 new. But my suggestion is the Marlin M60 semi-auto for a plinker.

Love my 25N. I sold my Ruger 77/22 around '92 or so and picked up my Marlin for under $90 (back then). It's been a great shooter over the years, still is and it's never given me a bit of regret.

If you decide on an autoloader I'd suggest the 10/22 over the Model 60 which is one of the few Marlins I am not particularly partial to. The Ruger can be had new for $200 and used should come in close to your budget.

My first .22 LR bolt action rifle was the Marlin 880 SQ with bullbarrel . I got it for $200 in 1999. It is very accurate and likes almost all ammo. Only thing i complained about is the mag well is made of plastic. It doesnt last long . I had changed it twice now, and the parts aint cheap.

i have a savage 93 and marlin 25mn bolth are 22mags but same gun available in 22lr. I have owned bolth guns for around 15 years and realy like them.I dont think you can go wrong with either savage or marlin

Yup, Marlin for auto.
I got a Savage Mark 2 for about that much from Wal-Mart, you could probably find them less used a a gun show. Very basic, tapered barrel, synthetic stock, and I still love the thing. The right ammo can shoot dimes at 50 yards.

+1 on the Marlin 60. Tube fed, no mag to buy (or loose!) You should be able to score a very nice used one for $100, a new one for $50 more.

Savage makes a pretty good bolt action in that price range. I think Savage makes some decent guns, at least with their .22lr rifles anyways.

Little more than you want to spend, but I just picked up a S&W M&P 15-22, for 380 bucks. Bought it for my daughter so she could have a rifle like her dad's, but I think I'll have just as much fun plinking with it!

I have a couple of Marlin model 60's & like them a lot. A buddy of mine I shoot with sometimes has an old Savage bolt action .22. I don't know what model his savage is but it is a bolt action & has a tube mag. It is a good shooter.

Start hitting the local gun stores, pawn shops, and/or gun shows and see what pops up. You can often find gems for that price used. I'd rather have an older .22 for $150 than an new .22 for $150, in most cases.

For that sort of budget I'd go used as well. A little re-search along with the suggestions in this thread should teach you what some of the good older models were that would shoot well and come with the dovetail for mounting a scope.

I would not turn down some of the "kid's" single shot options either. I've got an old but good condition Remington 6 that was given to me that shoots better than I can aim. And that's about 100 years old even if it does look like the hounds of hell were using it as a chew toy.

When it comes to "plinking" my first choice would be a semi-auto or lever action like the Ruger 10/22 or the Marlin 39a, but if you want a bolt at that price, you probably need to look at the used market. A nice used Marlin XT would probably be in your price range or maybe one of the less expensive versions of the Savage Model II.
