So I've been bitten by the AK bug. I had previously sold my romy SAR-1 looking to upgrade. I've been around all the gunshops in my area and came down to three models I'm interested in...the new updated SIG 556R, a converted SAIGA in 7.62x39, or a zastiva PAP M70 in wood. I really like the feel and features of the SIG but worry about my previous poor experiences with SIG customer service should i end up with a lemon. The M70 fit and finnish remind me of the old norincos i never snagged when i had a chance in the late 90s. The SAIGA would be nice as it is a made in russia ak type, and is about as close as ill ever get to the real deal...This is more of a range toy, just looking to diversify my gun collection. Any experiences or suggestions would be helpful!

I bought a Arsenal back when they were not nearly as expensive as they are today. Also purchased 2 Saigas. One 223, the other 7.62x39. These I left stock. The Saigas shoot nearly as well as the Arsenal. All 3 are enjoyable to shoot. Which you get depends upon how much you want to spend.

Converted Saigas are exceptional rifles. Accurate (as far as AKMs are concerned), affordable, robust, reliable, and deadly. This, sir, is my choice.

So the converted SAIGA...glad to hear they are a bargain. Is a converted one for 660$ reasonable? Any aftermarket forearms? The one on it feels like a plastic toy!

my suggestion

23 inch 7.62x39 Vepr Version 1 (standard sights -- it allows to reuse standard AK gas blocks)

you get heavy barrel, RPK receiver, 23 inch barrel, impeccable fit and finish

(and yes you will need to convert something to make it hi cap)

basically a beautiful, overbuilt AK that is also more precise
