I had a chance to handle a Century CETME last night...and while the Century build felt like junk, I did love the HK (I'm aware it was originally the CETME) charging handle. Now I did some reading and realized that the PTR's exist for no other reason but to be clones of the HK 91. Now I've never had a .308/7.62 Nato rifle (and with my Garand even though 30-06, I have no need to get an M1A as a Garand and M1A are similar in many ways), so I'm very interested in the PTR.

Therefore I have a couple of questions.

1. What PTR model seems to be the best copy of the HK 91?
2. Which is the lowest costing one?
3. Which ones have issues with Surplus Ammo and which don't?
4. How accurate is the gun? This is subjective, but I mean more like a AR than AK....and yes I know an AK can be accurate, but so can a bazooka, accuracy can be subjective. Now I'm not a great shot, so I don't care about sub-moa accuracy (well not yet).
5. Are the surplus mags really $3-10 bucks? Someone mentioned it to me and I can't believe their are mags that are cheaper than an AK-47, but I won't complain, any reason why they are so cheap?
6. Is the PTR totally made in the US eliminating any need for 922(r) worries unless I try and replace it with HK parts. Does anyone have a link to an ATF letter on the parts count for the HK91 or I guess how many foreign parts a PTR 91 can have?
7. Overall do you like the gun? It's either this or an AR, but I've had an AR before, and I'm interested in something different.

I have a PTR-91 that I lilke. It's one of the models that will not cycle surplus ammo or any other ammo that has a tar sealant at the case mouth. PTR solved this issue with the PTR-91 GI model. While being able to shoot surplus would be nice, mine functions 100% flawlessly with Brown/Silver bear, Wolf/tula, and PPU M80 in addition to other commercial .308. The quality, fit, and finish is excellent and many people think that the PTR-91s are just as good if not better as the original HK91. I have an original German surplus Fero Z optic mounted on top of mine. Even with the cheap steel case surplus, mine is 2 MOA...better with higher quality ammo...and yes, surplus magazines are cheap, it's one of the reason I bought the rifle because I like to have a lot of extra magazines.

It's a well made, quality firearm.

what H1500308 sums it up!I have the exact set up and this gun is tons of fun.If you dont know yet its 2 weapons in one.It throws brass as hard as it does bullets!

I have an old JLD model with the tight chamber. With 155grain Hornady Amax bullets and H4895 I routinely get 1" groups at 100 yards, and with a 4x FeroZ scope shot a prairie dog on the run at 400 yards with witnesses, and the same 155 grain loading. If you reload get a port buffer, and maybe a brass catcher. I bought one and cut the bottom out of it so it drops the brass right at my feet from standing, and right beside me from prone.

IME, this is probably the most accurate rifle of military derivation I have owned. I'm to the point now where I am reluctant to shoot it for fear of eroding the throat and the accuracy of the rifle.

One of these days, hopefully soon, I'll buy one of the military versions with the slender barrels for blasting, and as a sear host, and keep this one for occasional use. If you buy one I think you will be happy.

CAVEAT. My understanding is that with the recent vintage rifles the bolt and or bolt carriers are perhaps not so good, as bolt heads have been reported to break at the roller windows. The aluminum metal forends do get sizzling hot, so I would replace that ASAP with one of the triangular heat shielded forends. The triggers as they come can use some work, I recommend Bill Springfield who has done a couple triggers for me. Too, I would replace the rear sight drum rather quickly. This is because if they are like mine was, when they come from the factory there is not CQB notch, only a 100 yard aperture. The 200 yard aperture is just fine for 100 yards, once sighted at 200, and the notch makes it much easier to shoot IMO.

I hope you enjoy learning how your rifle works as much as I did.

I've got the PTR in 7.62x39 that takes AK mags, perfect function and much better accuracy that the average AK!

Unless you gotta have .308, IMHO this is hard to beat.
