So I just ended picking up a pre lock S&W 629-5 Classic 8 3/4" barrel and a 1" Ultradot scope...all for an old welder.

I'm not a fan of wheel guns, and I was looking for something a bit more 1911-esque, but let me tell you...this hand canon is super accurate! Off-hand at 30-ish yards I was getting good groupings on a pie plate.

This gun is H..E...A...V...Y though, I've shot a Taurus .454 Casul before and I compare this a dream to shoot over that.

Don't know how long I'll keep her though, I'm still set on a good 1911.

Nice looking revolver mfldmike, my guess is it wouldn't last long in the classifieds if priced properly or posted for a 1911 trade of some sort.

Why don't you just keep it AND get a 1911? Is it taking up too much room or are you one of those that feels that you can't have more than one gun at a time?

I ask this because I see the same type of posts on the forums all the time and I quite frankly don't see the logic in them.

1. Handguns don't take up much room.

2. If you have it in your possession, it would imply that you have paid for it and owe no payments.

3. Guns, like tools, have different uses and one gun will serve a particular purpose better than a different gun will.

4. While a 1911 is a wonderful gun (I have three), that 629 you have (I have one of those too) is a wonderful gun also and MUCH more accurate at longer ranges.

5. The fact that it is a pre-lock, pre-MIM gun makes it more desirable than the later production Smiths.

6. I speak from forty years of personal experience (and maybe hundreds of guns) when I say that I wish I still had most of the guns I have sold over the years.

You say you are not a revolver guy, fair enough, but I would say that if you keep that gun for a while and shoot it some, you might just find out that there is room in your safe for both types of handguns.

I have quite a few gun, both short and long, I've never been one to say you should limit the amount of weapons you own.

Space isn't a concern, but even for a handgun this thing is huge. I've shot it, a few times, and think its one of the more accurate handguns I own. For its caliber it also has one of the better felt recoil out of the ones I have (partly due to its weight.

I also own the gun outright, and didn't spend a penny in it. I traded a welder that I wasn't using for it. Yes, everything was more than legal and I have a bill of sale for it.

Purchasing a 1911 right now isn't an option...especially with the holidays fast approaching. I'm hell bent on a 1911 because I used to have a Stainless Steel Springfield Armory when I was young, I never fired it and bought it brand-new. At the time I needed the cash and it was expendable, but I always regretted it in the long run.

I can appreciate wheel guns, but they really don't do anything for me. I do have a couple snubbies though that I like.

If I'm mistaken this model does have MIM hammer and trigger, although it is the last edition to be pre-lock.

I don't mind it, and I might even decide to keep it but I'll still look in the mean time. To me, a good gun (for you) is one that you are going to use and shoot...I don't see myself using it that muc.

I would definitely unload that 629. Should be reasonably easy to sell.

Yes , the 629-5 is MIM. I have one in the 6 1/2" and the accuracy is among the best of any handgun I have ever fired. Also own a Springfield Range Officer 1911. I actually enjoy having both to shoot.

Great looking Smith. The 44 is an accurate caliber and with that long barrel and scope, it should be a tack driver.

It's definitely spot on accurate, the most accurate handgun I own.

I'll unload it...I'm sure someone out there wants this in a collection...really hell bent on a good SS 1911.

I do have more respect for wheelguns after shooting/owning this one!

I will, I don't need validation to sell or trade anything.

I wanted other people to know that my bias towards wheelguns didn't affect what I thought of this on the range.

In the end, the gun is super accurate. It's heavy, but also a tack driver.
