It's just a trick to collect data on the subjects if it's hosted at whitehouse.gov

If you are afraid to tell your government that you expect to keep the second amendment rights you currently have, because they "might get your name", then there's a bigger issue at hand. Either you are unreasonably paranoid of your public servants, or you have reason to fear those who are in power who are supposed to BE your public servant.

Our government wasn't designed to be feared, it was designed to serve the public interest.

If the average common man fears their government, then our government has derailed from it's stated purpose.

Food for thought.

I also signed it, though I think the last line sounds a bit juvenile. A more professional tone to the petition would have been better.

For those who are complaining about the petition thing, here's my take on it: signing the petition may not help gun rights, but it certainly can't hurt them. The more often this issue is placed in front of the President (from our angle) the better.

For those of you who are worried about going on some special government "gun nut" list as the result of signing an online petition, well, I think you need more help than I can provide here in a forum. The black helicopters aren't coming your direction, and the tin foil over the light bulbs won't actually keep the aliens out. I think that kind of unfounded fear is an issue that really ought to be addressed around here. If we hide in the dark corners due to misplaced paranoia, we'll never get our point across to those who really matter (such as non-gun owners who vote, and haven't decided where they stand on this issue, or even the politicians who write our laws). Our government is here to serve us, just so long as we require it to.
