Best small caliber "farm" gun

What is a "farm" gun? If you want something to carry around in a truck, farm tractor, or what ever; why wouldn't you just use something you have that you won't feel bad about if it gets a few scratches or dings? Really, these threads about a gun for this and a gun for that are really amusing. A farm gun??? Grab the old 22, the beat up 870 or 500. Unless you think you'll run into a griz or rino, why would you need more?

I'm looking to buy my father a new gun for Christmas. He wants a small caliber gun to use around the farm. My family has a dairy farm with about 500 acres, and he wants something reliable, cheap, and durable, as well as being accurate. He wants something able to take out the various critters around the property like pigeons, woodchucks, or what have you.

He has individual guns for any and all animals on the farm, but really wants one all purpose gun he can keep in the farm truck.

All i can tell you is, my "farm gun" is a Rem. 597M, and it's worked perfect since i bought it several years ago...

We've been using the 22mag. cartridge here on the farm since it came out, and i'd say it's just about the perfect cartridge for farm use.

Best part is, i don't have to worry about picking up the empties or reload it! This is a "work" cartridge, i don't want to bother with all of that, and at $11/50 i can afford to shoot it a little.

Another vote for the .22 mag Rimfire if you don't reload. The old 25-20 and 32-20 were made as farm guns and are about perfect with either capable of potting an unwary deer in close. The .357 Marlin Carbine works good on my son's place as a farm gun with mostly .38s.

No offense, but it sounds like your father is the guy that has everything he needs and just likes a new gun. Buy him whatever he doesn't have. But there is no reason that he can't just pull out the "beater" and stick it in the truck. Why would he want to do that with a new gun that you get him as a gift.

Maybe we're all in a different income bracket, but a new gun for a truck farm gun really is a hard sell where I live.

But there have been enough posts to give you direction on whatever you want to buy. Your dad will love whatever it is.
