[I know. Paying $70 for a box of twenty not too common rifle rounds will make your decision even more smart. Why not just stop now?

I've never been stupid enough to pay $70 for 20 rounds!

About 6 weeks ago, there was a shortage here. It has eased a bit, though finding CCI small pistol and rifle (non-magnum) is still hit-or-miss.

I stocked up when CCI SP were $23 with no hazmat. Grafs ran this sale about a year and a half ago.

It doesn't take that much of an oreder at Powder Valley for the savings to make up for the haz mat fee.

The selection is usually better as well.

Might as well stock up.... or get a couple buddies to put an order together with you.

I picked some up on my lunch break today. I have to drive 40 miles usually to get to this shop in Raleigh, I just happened to have business down that way today.
They had Winchester only primers of all sizes, but they were expensive.
$38/k
they also sold 100-packs for $4

Small pistol always seem to be the rarest as those are the types of rounds that get shot in the largest quantities.

I'd say to take the advice on stocking up in large quantities from an online source. You also have the option of using Small Rifle as a substitute as those will work for small pistol loadings.

Thankfully I was able to purchase 12,000 primers locally a while back at $20 per 1000. I've shot about 2,000 of those so far but I figure the remaining 10k should last me another year or so.

Powder Valley will ship powder and primers together in same package. That really helps.

So will anyone else that stocks both - Graf, Gamaliel, etc. Make it work by buying 10-20,000 primers and a few 8# jugs of powder

Our just built Gander Mt. store does not carry reloading supplies at this time, management said corporate is considering it in the near future, hope so.

Don't count on it - ours in Ocala got rid of it all and it isn't coming back - they still stock powder, but that is it

I called my supplier today - he has beaucoup LP primers but no SP ones. So it looks like I shoot the 45 but not the 357.

Recently bought 10K of primers from Powder Valley. Delivered price was $302.80. Right to my front porch. Local price would have been $541.25

Amen!. A few weeks ago friend and I ordered 150 pounds total. HAZMAT, S&H, insurance, because we can fees, etc., added $1.04 per pound/thousand. With local powder prices at $30 plus per pound (no, not VihtaVuori), PV was an easy decision.

Buy Tula/Wolf primers if money is an issue.

You can get those online for about $20 a brick, sometimes less. I prefer to buy american but if CCI etc is going for over $30 I buy the russian brands which just go 'bang' like the other stuff.

I continue to order primers and powder on line. I try to order with several other friends to help cover Hazmat whenever possible. I learned 4 years ago to keep at least a 6 month supply of everything to avoid paying sky high prices. Powder Valley is an excellent supplier.

Just placed an order with Powder Valley about a week ago.
No Winchester SPP available. I think they had some Tula or CCI SPP...since I don't have any experience with ether (and have heard varying reports on both) I just went with the LPP. Since I shoot far more .45acp than everything else put together, I am okay with that for now.

A friend and I each ordered 5k primers, and about 4 lbs of powder each. All for one HazMat charge. With shipping, insurance and HazMat charge, the primers still ended up around $29/1000. The powder ended up around $18/lb.

I cannot find any place that can touch those prices locally.

I wouldn't buy any reloading supplies from either Gander Mtn or Bass Pro where I live. Their prices are terrible (both @ $45/k on primers and $25+ on all powders). My lgs are even worse. I swear everybody seems to want to charge me a seperate hazmat on EACH item I buy locally. I buy only online nowdays, kinda sad really.

Because you reload.
Stop reloading because of $30/k primers you'll have to pay for factory. Many factory loads are way more than $70 for 20. Do you follow?

I think not buying those CCI SPP was a mistake on your part, especially since you were already paying the hazmat fee. I use mostly CCI SPP and I have never had a problem with them. I also use Winchester when CCI's are unavailable with the same good results.

I live in Canada and I pay $27.50/1000 when buying 5000 CCI small pistol primers locally.
I can get Federal small pistol primers for $33.00/1000 at my local range.

I've only been shooting for 2 years now and have never seen any shortages in primers or powder since.
No matter when I visit the club they always have palettes of primers on hand.
Our prices actually have been coming down since the volume of primer sales have been increasing.

Canada is the the USA, you don't have Obama to spark panic buying. The shortages are being cause by panic buying because many are afraid Obama is going to limit access to anything that has to do with shooting. They feel he can't take our guns he will try to make ammo and components so scarce we can't shoot those guns!

RATS! was in their store a few days ago and the had 4lb. jugs of unique on the shelfs (nothing else) was HOPING this was a sign of things to come. My son has been in your Ocala store and said it's the same as the one they just opened here in Valdosta.

I understand the political situation in the USA.
I am in the USA almost weekly and in Northeastern NY and Northern VT the shelves are stocked both in LGS's and Dicks, Gander Mtn, and Walmart.
I cannot legally purchase components or ammo in the USA with intent to export so I window shop following trends.
2008 was a much different situation compared to 2012.

The only thing I can't find on the shelves in this area are SMK's in .30 cal 168gr and 175gr.

Wolf 223 small rifle magnum primers are only $14.50/k at Wideners. It goes down to $14/k for 5k or more. It took them 2 weeks from order to ship tho.

I seem to be living in the right place. In Tidewater there are a number of well-stocked gun stores, so if I need primers I can always get them. A shop within a 20-minute walk stocks all sizes of CCI for 2.99 per hundred. Given the shipping and hazmat fees involved in ordering on-line, I sometimes go there for a couple hundred of types I don't use in volume (LR and LRMag).

In the nearly two years I've been rolling my own, I've never been unable to find any primer I needed locally. Sometimes I have found only Winchester or Remington and none of my favorite CCI, but for my mid-range loads that is a non-issue.
