Can anyone here recommend a good book covering the ins and outs of the AR-15. I am from the generation where I just google everything, but I need to buy a book for someone a bit older than me, who is more comfortable with something real in front of him. He's very skilled mechanically, and has done complete rebuilds of car engines, but he's a little worried about digging into his AR. I keep telling him that an AR-15 is made of legos compared to a small block V8, but I think having a book in front of him would really help him get the most of his rifle. (Plus it will make a perfect Christmas present).
He's not really looking for something with the history of the gun, but more complete breakdown instructions, cleaning, maintenance, etc. I was looking at the DoD's Operator's Manual and was wondering if this is a good read? Are the differences in the firing mechanism between a full-auto M-16 and a semi-auto AR-15 significant?
Is there a better option out there? Doesn't have to be an AR-15 bible, just all the basics to keep an AR running at its best.
[edit] I should mention this is a standard 16" S&W M&P-15, nothing fancy
