Can anyone here recommend a good book covering the ins and outs of the AR-15. I am from the generation where I just google everything, but I need to buy a book for someone a bit older than me, who is more comfortable with something real in front of him. He's very skilled mechanically, and has done complete rebuilds of car engines, but he's a little worried about digging into his AR. I keep telling him that an AR-15 is made of legos compared to a small block V8, but I think having a book in front of him would really help him get the most of his rifle. (Plus it will make a perfect Christmas present).

He's not really looking for something with the history of the gun, but more complete breakdown instructions, cleaning, maintenance, etc. I was looking at the DoD's Operator's Manual and was wondering if this is a good read? Are the differences in the firing mechanism between a full-auto M-16 and a semi-auto AR-15 significant?

Is there a better option out there? Doesn't have to be an AR-15 bible, just all the basics to keep an AR running at its best.

[edit] I should mention this is a standard 16" S&W M&P-15, nothing fancy

Look into "The AR-15 Complete Assembly Guide, Build and Maintain your own AR-15" by Walt Kuleck and Clint McKee.

There are other good ones out there.

I have the assembly guide and it is very good on discussing how the AR is assembled and how to do things on the rifle.

I also have the assembly guides for the M1 and M-14 and they are my "go to" books when I need some information on how the rifles are put together.

I have not looked at the owners guide. I am sure it is well written.

If you have little knowledge about the AR-15, I would get both. I probably ought to get one.

Another good one is "Build Your Own AR-15" by Duncan Long. It's very concise and goes into detail just enough for a first-timer to understand the mechanical principles behind the rifle. Civilian AR-15 IS pretty much an M16, sans auto sear, only FCG and bolt have minor differences. Service manual for either one will do, they're basically the same rifle.

"The AR-15 Complete Assembly Guide, Build and Maintain your own AR-15"is as good as any. It does have one major error on how to test the bolt gas rings. along with a copy of the TM23&P you would cover every aspect of the AR.

The fire control group is completely different. On a good AR that is the only difference because it will have the M16 design bolt carrier.

Usually I will receive a USAF Airman's Manual [Spiral-bound]
U.S. Air Force (Author)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

That does not get too deep really into the in's and out's of the M16 platform (No history lesson), just simply cleaning and disassembly practices and misc. info.

I have seen them on Amazon from time to time but they can be expensive around $100 each.

The typical M16 That the USAF uses is a Semi-auto/ 3-round burst AR that for the sake of argument is not really all that much different in how you maintain one or break one down vs. a civilian AR version only the trigger mechanism is modified for the 3- Rd. burst option. So whatever DOD manual you are looking at should be okay.

(Without getting too technical which some people will "It's not that different for what he is asking in terms of normal operation".)
