Just ordered up some Hornady 55gr fmj's for use in my 18" 1:8 AR. Looking for something clean burning, easy metering that gives consistent results at longer ranges. What would you recommend?

Acc 2200 is a very good powder. It was mil over run about 10 years ago. I bought 2 8lb jugs of it. Now they only show it in 1lb cans.

I've suggested h322 pretty much every time I see thread asking about powder for 223 ar15s. Several reasons I like it is sub moa performance, very clean burning, and one very important factor for me is that its very thrifty. With another common powder like varget, a charge of 26_27 grains is used, where with h322 its more like 21_22 grains, so its basically like you get a free by every fifth or sixth round. It adds up.

I've used all the powders mentioned with pretty good results. AA-2460 is my 'goto' for .223. It's a ball powder, very consistant metering, and burns clean. The .223 is a very easy round to load so have fun finding what your rifle likes.

My Favorites = H335, WC844 and Varget.

Best Powders = H335, H322, WC844, Varget, RL-10x, AR-Comp, AA2230 and X-Terminator.

Others that work well = W748, BL-C(2), WC846, 4895, TAC, AA2460 and AA2520.
I'm sure there are more but those are the ones I know of...

I use H-335 for my bulk loading. Meters well. For my accuracy loads, I've had the best luck with Varget. It doesn't meter so well for me.

I like Varget, but it's better with 62's than 55's. I bought some WC844 for the 55's but the days are too short and cold up here, so I haven't tried it yet.

There are a few places that sell SMP-842, and it looks very promising. But I haven't found anybody that ships it. (I'm not gonna drive all the way to Tennessee to get some.)

I recently bought 32# of 844, which loads the same as H335. Works great for me.

26.0 gr of Varget or 24 gr of Reloder 15.
This is with 55 gr FMJ's in a 20" 1 in 9 twist. OAL 2.230

I've used both powders with excellent results.
The gun store was out of RL-15 so I tried Varget, otherwise I never would've changed from RL-15.

Your barrel length or twist rate may or may not do as well.

Thanks for all the suggestions, looks like everyone has their favorite (go figure). For those recommending the H335, have you had good results with heavier bullets as well as the 55/62gr ones?

This will be my first attempt at rifle reloading and I'd rather find a single powder that will work well for a variety of bullet weights, at least for now.

Thanks...

Then you want Varget. I don't think you can overcharge it enough to get into trouble; a max load is usually a slightly compressed load. And it's accurate.

I typically use AA2230 with good success, but recently bought a pound of BLC-2 to try as my LGS was out of AA2230. From what I read, it works fine.

BL-C(2)/WC846 will work in the .223 but it's more suited for the other NATO round, the 7.62. The 5.56/.223 powder is H335/WC844.

I prefer H335 over BL-C(2) in the .223 but like you said, it will work. A buddy of mine shoots a lot of .308 ammo in a few service rifles including an M1A. He also shoots some .223 ammo but not as much. He uses nothing but WC846 and bought 6X 8lb jugs about 2 years ago. He likes the results in the .223 but then again, he never did try H335/WC844. (and with 48 pounds of powder he probably never will)
