Well I know the 5r has many threads and I've read a number of them but my question is a little different I hope.

Back story is a guy my dad works with is getting married therfore he is downsizing his collection. He has on consignment at a local gun store a Remington 700 5R in 300 win mag(or 308, dad didn't remember off hand, but he thought 300) from the info I got on it, it comes with a bipod, mount rings, and a 14x50 scope. Fired very little, as in less than a box from brand new.
From what I understand everything is top of the line. He's asking $1300 for everything, and from what my dad says he would take a lot less.

I'm going to stop by the shop tomorrow and look it over. But from the info I posted so far would you buy it? I think it's worth it, but would you buy it? I'm only asking that because of the recent political and world events(that need no further debate here) that say maybe I should be looking at other types of rifles. and also because I already own a Remington 700pss in 308. I do hand load so ammo cost and avalibitity is of little concern. In the past I have only shot groups out to 100yards but my club range goes to 300yards, and recently I shot at a friends range that goes to 500yards. So if you were in my position would you buy this rifle?

Depends on scope and rings. The rifles I've seen locally new are about 1100. Also depends how much cheaper he would come down. Then do you really want a 300 win mag? I like them and they are fun to shoot but I don't want one. I like my 7rem mag more

I'm the opposite of natynatesfish, I got rid of a 7mm RM and kept a .300 mag. The .30 cal just has more bullet choices and to me kicks no worse than a 7mm mag.

That said, you won't shoot it often. Ammo is expensive and it isn't fun to shoot. And that's why it's probably on the for sale rack.

The .308 on the other hand is fun to shoot.

What brand of scope? It might be a great deal! I would not figure recent events into the buy/don't calculations, I think that type of rifle is pretty safe. But, who knows? That's just me.

Between my dad and myself we already have a 308win, a 30-06, and an M1 Garand so I liked the fact that it was 30 cal that way I dont have another size bullet laying on the shelf. Like I said before ammo cost is of little concern because I hand load and could still probably reload 300 for 50-60 cents per shell. Do I need a 300win mag no, but now that I have a place that I can shoot 500 yards it looks a lot better to me. As far as recoil goes I've shot 7mm mags before and they were not too bad but I would also shoot a lot more out of my gun than I have a 7mm, so that is a slight concern but I think there's ways around that.

I'm not sure what scope/base/rings are on it yet, I'm going to go look at it in an hour or two and will update with full details then.

If you plan on heading out west it would make a good gun but you cant big game hunt in state with it. If you are shooting paper there 5 different cartridges that produce the same exterior ballistics with half the recoil. Unless you could buy the gun at a price where you could legally resell it for a profit I would pass on the deal.

If you were to use it for elk or moose yea buy it. For a bench /fun gun no. A 243 to 308 would suit better at 500 yards. The 14 power scope is not optimal ether . So maybe pass up on it.

It would have I be a nice scope to bring 1300 IMO.

It also depends how far you want to be able to shoot as far as the 308 bs 300 argument goes. Unless you are shooting past 600 I'd say the 300 isn't worth the punishment.

My neighbor has a 5R that he picked up about 2 years ago. They go for about $1100 around here. Considering it's in like new condition, WITH a bipod, scope mount, optics, etc. I'd say $1300 is pretty freakin' fair unless the scope is some kind of POS knockoff. If the scope is decent at all, $1300 isn't half bad. If you handload, then aside from using a little more powder, it's not really going to cost you all that much more to load than the 308. I'm more recoil tolerant than 90% of the folks out there, so I'm probably not a good judge for such things but I think the 5R is particularly pleasant to shoot. The extra weight from the heavy barrel and the design of the stock goes a long ways towards making it a lot more shootable.

My $.02

The 5R is a darn good target rifle in either chambering. The heavy bull barrel and heavy stock will make it a great choice when shooting off a bench if you want to shoot at long range. But it would be about the last choice I'd make for lugging up and down mountains at 10,000 feet looking for elk. Not really needed for 500 yard shooting if that is all you want to shoot. The 308 would really be better for that.

To be honest, if the scope and other stuff are really high end I'd buy it even if I didn't need or want it if I could afford it. I've done that several times and flipped items at a profit to pay for what I really wanted.

Well I finally found out the rifle is a 308, and I'm not sure about what scope it has because the rifle I saw didn't have one. So I'm going to see if I can do some digging and come up with something. Being I already have a 700P in 308 this isn't that appealing anymore. Although my 308 dose need to take a trip to the smith.
