Thank you Lerk. That Blackhawk though not an Old Model(which I personally prefer), has a story. A friend of mine inherited it when his Father passed on. His father bought it new in 1975 from a LGS in Spokane, Wa. His father also bought the Tasco scope, Weaver no drill/tap base, Weaver rings, RCBS dies & two boxes of ammo at the same time. The Father mounted the scope, shot 90 of 100 rounds & then put it in the safe. It was never shot again. My friend sold it to me about a year ago. I got the way it sits plus the dies, the 90pc of brass that was shot through it & even the remaining 10rds of ammo. I did put those stocks on it to save the Originals. After 35+ years of only being cleaned & oiled, that scope was still dead on. My best group off a rest so far at 25yrds is 1.79" with my handloads & cast boolits. I'm still working with the load. It's an amazing weapon & I'll never part with it!

Started shooting a friend's .41 Redhawk in the early 80's, and now have three .41 Redhawks (blue 5.5", stainess 5.5" and 7.5"), Blackhawk 6.5", Super Blackhawk Hunter 7.5", and a Taurus model 415 2.5" snubby.

I shoot a lot of Berry Plated bullets with Unique, and am considering making the switch to lead from wither Oregon Trail or Missouri, using Unique or 2400. Any suggestions?

I really like Missouri Bullets .41 215gr Tropper bullet with Universal and Trail Boss (Haven't tried Unique or 2400 with them yet though). No experience with Oregon Trail items.

For full house magnum loads I use 2400 with a Montana Bullet Works H&G 215gr SWC. This is an awesome load with lots of power and accuracy, the bullet is a true Keith bullet, and was designed by Keith himself for the .41. The bullet is expensive but worth it IMHO. If you can find them another good bullet is the 230gr Keith made by Dry Creek Bullet works. He made a run of them not long ago but he may have sold out of them.

and get one of the 41*HG*258*4*CAV*HOLLOW*POINT*BRASS. You WILL NOT be disappointed in the least. Click on the listing and it will take you to the original thread on the group buy and usually show the bullet and or dimensions. It might be a bit pricey, but they are a Cadillac of molds, and you DEFINITELY get what you pay for.

It comes with HP pins and blank pins so you can make either one or both at the same time. They throw bullets like nobodies business. One thing on the pins, if you use the "penta" pins you will need to run it a bit hotter for them to drop effectively, so don't get upset if they stick a bit. The MP molds in the H&G numbers have also been made as close to the original dimensions as possible. As such the first driving band on some of the Keith type MIGHT be an issue on some revolvers depending on the cut of your cylinder chambers. Haven't seen it in my Ruger or my friends S&W 657 but these are only two out of many out there.

Also for loading the Montana or the above, my friend and I have found that AA-5, 7, & 9 work VERY well with that design for a WIDE range of loads. Dry Creek also uses a Keith mold and also has a great heavy weight as mentioned. There is a write up on them here,

Thread: The misunderstood .41 Magnum

Loved the read and pretty much agree with your input on the loads you tried out. I have stuck to the 200-220 gr loads for most everything with the 200gr Remington SJHP being the most used until recently. I REALLY loved that old 170gr Rem and had I known they were going to drop it I would have scarfed up a supply ahead of time. I still have a few but nothing that will last long. That said I am in on a group buy waiting list for a MP mold which will throw a 170'ish grain HP so things might be looking up for the lighter load.

If any one of you pick up one of the MP molds, I'm warning you ahead of time, start putting away for another one, they are like the guns you will use them for, you get one and you just gotta have another.

We recently moved to a new place and I have not been able to set

up my Reloading bench yet. Soon I hope.

A question for you 41ers. I have single action Rugers in 45 colt and 357. I have a S&W model 629 with a 4 inch barrel. I reload for all of them and probably get as big a kick out of reloading as I do shooting. Due to age and bad back and knees my shooting is pretty well confined to shooting paper. To mix things up a little I shoot a lot at ranges between 50 and 75 yards. Given all this, help me justify adding a 41 mag. I know that "because I want one" is plenty justification, but a little fortification doesn't hurt! I'm not a "collector" so I buy guns to shoot, not lock away in the safe.

Fatcpa, it is logical in my opinion to consider a 41 magnum revolver at this point. You may find that you may shoot it better than the others. Give it a shot. Others would simply say that you can get everything the 41 mag gives you by adjusting your loads in a 44 mag.

I have a T/C Contender 10" that I purchased in 1982, a 6" Blackhawk ( 1981), and a 4 5/8 magna-ported Blackhawk , all in 41 mag.

I am in the Spokane area this week, wouldn't you know it , right after purchasing an Encore, I come a cross a Stainless Blackhawk hunter in 41 mag , and yet another Blued Blackhawk, 6".

Why couldn't I find these 24 hours sooner.

I did locate a full unopened box and a partial box of Speer 4417 220, grain 3/4 jacket bullets. I have sorely missed those. Cant wait to back to the wet side of the state and load some up.

I do like eastern Washington more and more, waking up to 30 deer and 20+ turkey in the yard, make my trigger finger itch.

This is mine. It was my Dad's that I inherited. I had the full engraving done by Jim Downing, who did a fantastic job. There's some personal engraving that I won't get in to. He had this in the 70's, it's one of the early. Us kids had it Magna-ported for him one year for Christmas (late 70's) 'cause it barked more than the .44. It's still a shooter and turns heads at the range. One of my most prized possessions.

Is a "slightly" modified S&W recoil-less .41 invited to this party?

Boxhead's gun on the previous page is a 3" Lew Horton Special...one of about 150 made. The 3" guns made back in 1986 with the 1/2 underlug are often advertised as LH guns but are not...they were just an uncatalogued stocking dealer special run.

Mac...that is a NICE Blackhawk...I have one like that with the Super Blackhawk gripframe...gives the gun a whole different balance and feel. One day I would like to put a SBH gripframe on the Flat Top I have...





Carbines...Marlins now START at a grand and work up. A few weeks ago I saw a FG (pistol grip stock) sell for $1600+ on GunBroker. Last time I saw a 16.5" stainless LTD sell it was $1350 but that was a year ago easy...no one sells them. It is insane.

I might have already answered you with a PM but don't remember. For load data I simply use the loads listed for the 210gr on Hodgdon's site. Primarily I use 20.5grs of 296 in Starline cases lit with Win-WLP primers. I seat them so that I have just a slight roll into the bottom edge of the cannalure. I have found that the case tension, coupled with the very slight roll crimp goes hand in hand with accuracy. Too many times I have seen rolled crimps that were severely overboard, and can't be good for an accurate load. This pic shows the difference between a slight roll and a tight roll. Both groups were shot free hand at 40yds, and all loads were identical, with only the crimp being lessened on the right hand side. It should have been a tighter group that what it was but I simply wasn't used to the trigger on my friends 657. It's a bit sweeter than the one on my RH for sure.


As for pictures of recovered bullets, I don't have any of them, as I usually don't get any back. I only recently began to try and catch what I shoot to reuse the lead, and the 200's are used for hunting and I haven't shot any since I started pouring lead. They shoot great however, hit hard, and usually drop things right on the spot. My close friend and I have dropped several hogs in the 200# range at distances out to over 100yds with them, and it is amazing how flat they really shoot, and how hard they hit out that far. Even there we get a pass through when the shot goes where it is supposed to go.

As of late I have been slowly gravitating more and more towards the cast side of things. I already have a couple of molds from Lee and the AWESOME MP brass ones. The MP 41-HG 258, as mentioned above is an awesome mold and has shown remarkable accuracy with a couple of different alloys. The first group I shot with them in the straight flat nosed SWC version,was simply a one hole group. It hit high left of my target, not being sighted in for them, and I had to hold over to keep form blowing the bucket apart. Still I put 4 rounds in an area which could almost be covered by my thumbnail at 25yds.

I'm on two other group buys for this caliber right now with one being the Lite 41 which hopefully will replicate the 170gr Rem to some degree, and another in the venerable "640" configuration. I already have the .452 version as well as the .432 version, and am waiting arrival of the .359, so I figured I might as well bite the bullet, (pun intended) and have a full set.

One thing about these molds, while they might be a bit high, you get what you pay for #1, and you have the options usually to pour up 3-4 different bullets form the same mold. They usually come with a small, large, and sometimes penta HP pin as well as the blank for pouring FN versions.

Anywho nuf rambling for now I got work to do, lead to melt, and bullets to sort through. OH whoa is me......

.41 has always been my favorite caliber...started with the Nickel 58 (S) and went from there. In fact, i only started handloading because shooting the 41 was too expensive...now I reload for all pistol cartridges. Casting bullets will be my next step.

I have several 58's...including a beater nickel one I carry hunting, camping, mountain trips, etc., a NIB Nickel (non S), and several Blue.

Also, 8-3/8" 57, 6" 57 (my shooter), Taurus 415 (good carry gun), Desert Eagle, and an 1894FG. And yesterday I added a nice Blackhawk w/ 6-1/2".

Oh, and let's not forget my various 41 Contenders...

Doesn't hold a candle to ko's collection, but I do love them!

I'd like to ressurect the question as to shotshells. The only reason I have to carry my 357 or 44 is for snake loads while at my cabin...anyone else make shotshells out of 41? Or can anyone make plastic caps??
