I was recently reading a post about Mossberg 500 and Remington 870 and who's better made and all that. Got me thinking. I own a Mossy 500 now, very little use, works great, but I don't get to shoot it much anymore. But, years ago I used to reload and shoot trap. Shot every Thursday night for about 5 years, used to go thru at least a 250-round case every week and would reload the hulls for the following week.
Over 5 years, that's over 60,000 rounds thru my old Remington 870 Wingmaster. I'd clean it every week, lube it, and it'd be ready for the next round of trap. Also used it for sporting clays, hunting, skeet, and turkey shoots. Anyway, didn't know how 60k rounds compared to what others are seeing. I bought my 870 used so have no idea how many rounds were thru it before I bought it, and in the years I owned it, never failed on me, never had to repair it (that I can remember). Again, I don't know if that's typical, or if there are things I should have replaced (springs for example) and I was simply neglecting the gun.
So, share your experience.

Well I bought a pardner protector pump made by H&R I really wanted a 870 but it wasn't in the cards and being 200 bucks cheaper left money for ammo :D:D:D.
So far I have only been able to put a couple hundred shells threw it  I'm working on that round count.

I only shoot about 5-6,000 rounds a year. And that gets split up between multiple shotguns.
Some of the guys at the club I'm sure are well passed the 100,000 mark in thier guns.

My first target gun I used a Ruger Red Label. At about 35,000 it went back to Ruger with issues, again at 50,000, and got rid of it at about 60,000. My current Beretta 682 has about 40,000 through it, but I don't shoot much any more. A Remington 11-87 I have has close to 50,000 through it. Most of my small gauge shotguns have at least 5000 through each of them, I have about ten of them. My old M12 trap gun probably only has 20,000 through it, I don't shoot much trap. When I shot registered skeet, I shot about 25,000 birds a year, I'm lucky to shoot 2000 a year now.

Mossberg 500, had it almost 21 years, exactly one round. I still have the fired shell.

My primary "target" guns are all Browning Citori XS Skeet models...and my primary 12ga is about 13 yrs old now ...and its got about 400,000 shells thru it ...( I only shoot about 7,500 a yr now - and not too muich 12ga anymore )..../ I have and still occasionally hunt upland birds with the same models...

My primary "target" gun in a 28ga ...is the same model Citori XS Skeet ...and it has about 150,000 shells thru it is all.../ but its the gun I shoot 75% of the time or more these days ( 3/4 oz of shot - cheaper to reload / nice patterns / very little recoil ) ...

My Citori XS Skeet models ( top one is 12ga - then 20ga - a 28ga - a .410 ..all 30" barrels.../ they've been very good guns !
----------------------------------------------
My Pump guns - are all Browning BPS Hunter models...and in 12ga and 20g are all around 35 yrs old .....and they've been thru a couple of now adult boys, I shot the 12ga for quite a few yrs for Trap...and now they're working their way thru the grandkids....so probably 500,000 shells thru each the 12ga and the 20ga..../ and they've both killed a lot of upland birds and waterfowl as well...over the past 35 yrs...

BPS Pump 20 and 12 030.jpeg.JPG are my pump guns...

( darn good thing I've been reloading for a long time !! ).....or I could have retired a long time ago on my ammo budget alone !! / but seriously, no regrets ....its been a good jouney....

I have no idea. My grandpa gave me his Remington M11 back in 1957 and I have used it many times ever since. I also have my other grandpa's Model 12, made in 1919, that he used, my dad used and I have used. Both of these guns still work perfectly.....chris3

Holy Hell! I don't think my round count is ANYWHERE near the 50,000 to 500,000 that many of you are boasting! I've had my Express Magnum for about 15 years, and average about 40 rounds a year.

As everyone else before me has said...not one malfunction, not one complaint :D

Most of mine are little used, but they are there for the moment when I need them. Three Browning pumps with from 20-100 rounds through them, and a used-to-be-someone-else's 1950s Stevens SxS with what must be tens of thousands.

I should get them to the range more often, I know.

I've had my 500 for 12 years or so now. It was my very first firearm. I am guessing that it has somewhere around 10,000 rounds through it. Most were skeet loads, but I've shot em all through this gun. The last few years I've gone easy on it. Got a Benelli Nova and shot it exclusively for 2 years then sold it when I picked the Mossberg up one day and started dusting more birds. The Nova bought me a brand new 535. Now I am working shells through this thing. It's not even broken in yet at around 400 rounds. I don't feel bad about beating the 535 up a little in a duck boat either.

500,000

A friend of mine who is a NRA Board Member put 500,000 rounds through his Browning OU before he sent it back to be rebuilt (it was getting a little loose). He then put another 250,000 through it. He's shooting a Kreighoff sporting clays gun now and trying to wear it out. Yeah, he shoots a lot.

He got a good one - I had to have new springs and firing pins put in my Browning at 90,000, but nothing else since.

One gent I know has been shooting for 75 years, the last 25 using a K-80. Runs at least 15,000 through it even at 83 years old, so he is close to 500,000 through that one gun; was sponsored by Fiocchi for ammo, so that saved a lot of cost........

I can only hope to win a flat of shells now and again....and I hope to be breathing at 83, let alone shooting sporting and FITASC

I usually shoot about 5,000 cartridges a year.
That number is spread out amongst a handful of guns.

Lately I've been enjoying my .410 pump guns a lot but,
I still shoot my .410 Citori XS Skeet the most.

BigJimP,

Like you, I've got the 28ga XS Skeet as well.
I don't have much interest in 12 or 20ga any more.
I'm happy to see you enjoy your Citori small gauges too.
They are rare. I've only seen one other than mine.

Single stack - I enjoy my 12 and 20 by loading 28 gauge loads for practice - amazing the short shot string and great patterns that you can get using 3/4 oz in 12 and 20

Hi oneounceload,

Thanks for the suggestion. I did consider that back when
I had a tubed target gun. Once I got the sub gauge Citori's I lost
interest in the 12 & 20 events. I did shoot the 28 in a 20ga event
or two. Then, I stopped going to Skeet shoots altogether
and no longer had any use for that heavy old gun.

Except for some antiques, now my 12 and 20ga guns are autos and
they don't get out much. Federal Walmart shells work for me!
The 12 & 20 reloaders sit in the garage collecting dust.
My Browning Gold 12ga still sees occasional service for Sporting
Clays and Bunker.

I'm just an old recoil sissy.

All mfg's have ups and downs....but none of my Citori XS Skeet models ...even at 400,000 plus rounds have even needed springs or firing pins....( but that's not a big deal even when it does happen )...
-------------
but all of my shells are "Target Loads" ...even my primary 12ga load is 1 oz of 8's at about 1225 fps ....( I bought some Remington Nitro STS 1 1/8oz at over 1300 fps ---and I give them to my adult boys to "empty them" ...but I want the hulls back - clean and unscratched....for my reloads darn-it....) ...but let them shoot those howitzer loads...( they're still young - in their 30's -- with no rebuilt shoulders..)....

I reloaded 200 shells in 28ga last nite....( I only shot 100 shells in the 28ga on Tue ..because it was cold out ) ....( but I'm ready for Sat, if it quits raining ...) ....

If you can count the rounds you have put through a shotgun it is a dust catcher. I used to put 200 rounds through my 12 ga mossberg 500 every weekend. I have no idea of how many years I have shot it or how many weekends I did something else. The past 15 years or so I have shot a 20 ga 500C when I am to lazy to reload shells for my 28 ga. Since I can get a case of 20 ga Winchester AA shells for $70 I get lazy quite often.

The club I get my shells through is big enough to get distributor prices on ammo and long guns. The price of components is shameful. I can get 20 ga shells for about the same price as once fired 28ga hulls.

All I shoot anymore is my SKB .410. I have just over 12k through it over the past 2 years. Mostly skeet targets with some sporting, 1 grouse, a handful of Chukar, and 2 preserve roosters. It's a fun little gun.

My 28" 870 only had ~200 shells through it before I swapped the barrel out for an 18.5", and then it was home defense only. Ended up selling it off eventually to pay some bills.

I wish I knew how many shells have been through my Winchester Model 12. The action on that gun is so smooth, and it definitely was built solid. I'm *never* letting go of my Model 12.

No way to figure out the round count on my .410 Mossberg 500. I've owned it since 1985 and that's pretty much the only shotgun that I use for all my small game hunting and informal clay/skeet shooting. The gun has seen a lot of shells over the years and is still going strong.
