UPS Refused to Ship My Gun Barrel

This seems to me to be a case of "too much info"....when I ship things I just ship it..I don't think it is necessary to discuss the item with a clerk. I hand them a box..insure if appropriate and pay them...easy.

UPS Refused to Ship My Gun Barrel

I had a similar experience with the USPS. When asked what I was shipping, I said it was barrels from a shotgun. The clerk slammed the window closed and dived behind the counter. A supervisor came out and told me I couldn't use the USPS for that. Rather than explain why he was an idiot and wrong, I went to another PO, said it was steel tubing being sent for custom machine work, and off it went. That was exactly what it was. Remember that this is the "New America" now, land of the stupid and home of the wussie. It's best to tailor your words so as not to frighten the sheeple.
I guess you've forgotten the genesis of the phrase "Going postal", eh? :p

And why did you even tell the nosy old biddy what was in the box in the first place? None of her business.
It amazes me sometimes how people do not read what they agree to:

UPS:
Right of Inspection
UPS reserves the right in its sole discretion to open and inspect any package tendered to it for transportation, but is not required to do so.

Fedex:
Inspection of Shipments
We may, at our sole discretion, open and inspect any shipment without notice.

She -- being a representative of "They/UPS" do, in fact, have and declare their right to know the contents of what they ship whether those contents be legal, illegal, or otherwise.

What's more, when you use their service, you accept their terms of service and grant them authority to check the contents of your package at their discretion without notifying you.

Period. Full stop.

Hey Kramer,
Taylors USPS office refused to ship my shotgun, but Duncan USPS did so gladly. Perhaps UPS has the same issue with not all staff have a competent understanding of rules/regs.

Considering printing their policy from their website, or show it to them on your iPad; or try another location.

I went to UPS today to ship a gun barrel back to the manufacturer for warranty work. When asked if the barrel was for a gun, I said that it was. Then, I was asked if it has a serial number. I told her that if it did, I would have shipped it through my FFL. She then pulled out a new policy she received a few days ago and read to me that they refuse to ship gun barrels and that I would have to go through an FFL. I told her that it was funny because they delivered it to my front door two days ago and never even asked for a signature as they dumped it off on my front poarch and left.

FedEx had no problems shipping it for me and I wrote UPS to tell them that they can keep their company policy because FedEx likes my money.
If, at a UPS hub, next words out of my mouth would have been "supervisor please".

I would have then told them why I was leaving, and going down the street to FedEx ground.

Don't use UPS for anything.

Besides any gun issues, they discriminate against the Boy Scouts of America.

No decent American should use them for anything.

Just shipped a Ruger Security Six to Ruger via ups. Printed label at home. Dropped in ups drop. Arrived at ruger no problems

You got lucky. While you didn't violate any laws you did violate their company policies which require that you pay for overnight shipping and that you declare it as a firearm.

You're lucky the package handlers didn't recognize the Ruger address and just walk out the door with it. The high rate of handgun theft is the stated reason they started requiring shipping them overnight.

I always use "machine parts" too, unless its a stock. Then it's a "wood carving".

It is a legal requirement to declare firearms. OTOH, if what you're shipping isn't legally a firearm...

Actually, it's not a legal requirement (not even for handguns) if you are shipping to a licensee or within your own state of residence. You may WANT to declare it for insurance purposes, but that's a different matter entirely.

I'm not going to quote everyone, but I'll answer some questions that were asked...

* I went to UPS because it is close to work and has a much, much shorter line for when I'm on my lunch break

* I stated "barrel assembly" because I insured it for $750 (was sending it back for warranty work)

* I had the box completely sealed and she never saw it

* I comfirmed that it was a barrel when she asked because I didn't think it was an issue, and I preferred she didn't open the box, possibly recognize that it was the whole upper receiver for one of those evil AR-15s, and then freak out

BTW, I got a reply from UPS and it is just a bunch of of their policy with absolutely nothing stated about barrels. This is what I received:

Thank you for your e-mail. Please note that automatic weapons are not authorized for shipment via our general UPS service offerings. In addition, there are multiple restrictions and requirements associated with transporting firearms in the UPS system.

The following lists explain who can send and receive shipments of firearms through UPS:

A Gun Manufacturer can ship firearms to the following receivers:

- Gun Manufacturer
- Licensed Gun Dealer
- Licensed Collector
- Individual (as a result of repair or adjustment only)
- Law Enforcement Agency (not a police officer at home)

A Licensed Gun Dealer can ship firearms to the following receivers:

- Licensed Gun dealer
- Licensed Collector
- Gun Manufacturer (as a result of repair or adjustment only)
- Law Enforcement Agency (not a police officer at home)

An Individual may ship firearms to a Gun Manufacturer only, for the purpose of repair or adjustment only. This is contingent on the individual not being prohibited by Federal, State, or local law to ship firearms. Please be aware that the shipment of a firearm from an individual to an individual is prohibited in the UPS system.

Additional information regarding the shipment of firearms in the UPS system is available at the following links:

This morning I wrote back stating that this was NOT a firearm and bascially a chunk of metal no different than shipping a car exhaust pipe for as much as the BATF was concerned. I also pointed out that their policy stated...

"An Individual may ship firearms to a Gun Manufacturer only, for the purpose of repair or adjustment only"

I stated that even if the barrel was a firearm (which it is not), they should have shipped it because it was going back to the manufacturer for warranty work, I had all the paperwork proving it, and I even had the Return Authorization number written in four places on the box that corresponded with the paperwork I had.

It's been 15 hours and I have not received a reply.

I've got a local UPS drop that has asked me what was inside some boxes I shipped and received. They were pre-charged pneumatic air rifles. I correctly stated they were pneumatic pumps. No sense alarming anyone, when there is nothing to be alarmed about.

Just this week sent an SR45 back to Ruger for warranty work using the UPS overnight air prepaid label they e-mailed me. Their e-mail said not to take it to a UPS Store for shipment but to take it to a UPS Customer Center for shipment. Followed their directions, gun was accepted with no problem, no-one asked what was in the box and the gun was delivered at Ruger in Prescott AZ the next day. Sent my FNS-9 to FNH-USA back in June using the UPS second day air label they e-mailed me, dropping it off at the local UPS Store, no questions, no problem. Sent my XD45 back to Springfield Armory in September using the Fed-Ex label Springfield Armory had Fed-Ex e-mail me. Their e-mail noted some "Pack and Ship" stores won't accept firearms. I dropped the package off at the local Copico store (UPS and Fed-Ex drop off site), no questions, no problem. Side note, three of the last four new guns I have purchased have required warranty work, my Glock 19 gen 3 being the exception!

Took them a while to admit the hub was wrong, so here is the most recent reply from UPS...

Thank you for your reply. I apologize for my delayed response. Your e-mail was forwarded to me by Julie J. for assistance. I can certainly understand your frustration and concern. I have confirmed that it is not UPS' policy to require the copy of an FFL when shipping a firearm or gun parts. The management personnel at your local Package Center have been informed of the bad information that you received to ensure this error does not occur in the future.

I am so sorry for the problems you encountered with this shipping location. I hope that you will afford us the opportunity to earn your trust and reestablish your faith in our service.

Please contact us if you need any additional assistance.

I had a similar problem with shipping a bolt to Anschutz. They told me I had to go to a special outlet and fill out a special form to send it. I said "bite me" and went to the USPS and had no problems. Unfortunately we will be getting more of this crap.
