I have read the military 7.62 is often loaded lighter (opposite of .223/5.56).
The case varies a little also.
I plan to try it in a Browning '81.

7.62x51 in a .308 chambered hunting rifle ok?

I've shot lots of 7.62 milsurp through my .308 Savage. The cases are externally the same. The milsurp ammo is supposedly loaded to lower pressures, but I've noticed no point of impact change vs commercial .308 ammo. The main difference is that the 7.62x51 cases are thicker, which changes the internal capacity and must be taken into account while reloading.

.308 chambers have tighter tolerances compared to 7.62 NATO chamber specifications. As such, any .308 chambered rifle can shoot 7.62 NATO ammo just fine; but not all 7.62 NATO chambered rifles can shoot commercial .308 ammo safely.

They are completely interchangeable, and for all intents and purposes, are identical.

No problems here either. I usually don't shoot milsurp ammo in my .308, but every time I have, it's been fine. VERY slight changes in POI for me.

Both 223/5.56 and 7.62/308 are interchangeable in most rifles. Yea, military rifles and ammo are made to very slightly differnt specs. Winchester, Remington, Ruger and all commercial rifles and commercial ammo are also often made to different tolerences that are often greater than the differencs between military rifles and ammo.
About the worst case is a some rifle and ammo combinations may not cycle reliably in semi autos. You find the same issue's with non-military semi-autos and non-military ammo.

I would switch them in any bolt rifle, no problem. If I say, did a couple of mag dumps through an M1A, and got it really hot, I might expect some cases to stick. I might try it in an AR-10 to see what happens.
Looks like we will probably get a argument started, but I shoot either & or in all my rifles chambered in said round be it .223 & or 5.56 NATO, same with the .308 & or 7.62 NATO & I don`t have a problem out of none of it....................
