So I'm going to attempt my first SBR build on my PAP M92 Zustava AK variant pistol. I've got my MI rail coming soon finally after waiting for it to come in on back order. I got the last Spikes Dynacomp brake they had in stock already fitted on nicely, and other parts are ordered (except the actual stock I havent decided completely yet on.)

Now it's time to get the legalities out of the way before I can start the actual project of course. I've got my form 1 (5320.1) and my check ready. I was wondering if anybody with experience could suggest just how detailed one needs to be on things like 4-i. where it asks why you're building? Can I just put Hobby and be done with it, or do I need to elaborate?

Also, I've heard of fella's setting up Trusts for such a thing. Anyone care to fill in the blanks on that scenario including Pros/Cons?

Just trying to make it as little pain in the butt as possible so any insight appreciated. Thanks!

I'm contemplating a SBS build right now myself. Something I've always heard from others is to get the receiver engraved before you submit the form 1. $200 tax is non refundable, so if there is a screw up with the receiver it's best to know before hand.

I would also hold on purchasing the stock until your stamped form arrives, as the mere possession of all the parts necessary to build an NFA weapons can be considered constructive possession or something like that.

And yes, "all lawful purposes" or "collection" would be fine for the reason box.

A Trust is the only way to get one if where you live you can't get the "chief law enforcement officer" sign off.

Other advantages of the Trust is you can have your wife and others on it so they can also use it without you being there, and you don't need to submit fingerprints and passport photos.

However, there are noises that the LEO sign off is going away and fingerprints and photos will be required for everyone listed in the Trust. This would negate the advantages of the Trust route -- requiring fingerprints and passport photos every time is pure harassment of law abiding gun buyers. Timeline of this happening is TBD.

Also trying set up an NFA trust here in FL. There are "retail" attorneys who are dedicating their practices to mass production for ~$600 a piece, which makes me nervous. Not that them specializing in one thing wouldn't make them better, just wondering how thorough they are in the process if they're churning. I have asked my estate atty that I've done business with for years to look into it for me…will advise.

State Laws on what makes a valid Trust vary, but I know there are lots of Lawyer guys in Texas that charge $400 for them, but we have a pre-paid legal plan at work so I had the Lawyer for it draw up an NFA Trust along with our Living Wills, Medical Power of Attorney, Will etc. Didn't cost any more that what we're already paying for the rather inexpensive pre-paid plan. Lots of other folks in Texas do it with Quicken or Legal Zoom, these options may not be viable in some other States.
