With all the fuss being made recently about firearms laws and interstate shipping and what not I can't believe this has happened, but it did. Two weeks ago I bought a beautiful Remington 1100 from a private individual in Pennsylvania, and abiding by the law, had it shipped to an FFL here in New York. I followed the tracking online, and in a day or two it was "on truck, ready for delivery by end of day." I notified my FFL to expect it.

It never arrived. The tracking status never changed, and it was last scanned at a UPS hub in Parsippanny, NJ. After 2 days of unsuccessful telephone calls to UPS, I finally got to speak to a human being who suggested that I contact the shipper to launch an investigation and file a claim, a process that is now underway. It is now 6 days overdue for delivery.

Has anybody else experienced this? I can understand it happening with a pair of slippers or even a television set ... but a firearm with all the special fees and precautions surrounding it? Hopefully, I be revising this thread shortly to report that it's been found and back on track, but in the meantime I'm pretty worried despite that it's insured for the purchase price.

it wouldn't be the first time a package was stolen... that would be my guess. if it was scanned at a terminal and was never scanned to depart, it's either still at the terminal or was stolen or somehow was accidentally placed on the wrong truck where it was later stolen.

If thieves can steal $50,000,000 of diamonds by simply cutting a hole in a fence, how hard could it be to steal a shotgun?

This is why I (and many manufacturers) use FedEx. UPS seems to have these issues more often than any other carrier.

Good luck with tracking this down; I hope you get it back...it's often not about the money at this point.

A firearm, clearly marked by "special fees and precautions" and no doubt "special labels", gets "lost" by UPS in New Jersey? Color me surprised and shocked.

Back in the day, you could ship handguns via UPS Ground....then it had to be Air, then it had to be Air Overnight.....all because their employees were stealing them.....

I wouldn't use anyone but Fedex.....

What really sticks in my craw is that it's illegal for me to simply drive across the Delaware River and pick it up myself, and bring it home in the security of my car. In fact, the shipper had to make an appointment to bring it to the UPS hub between 5:00-6:30 PM, because they apparently didn't want it hanging around the store all day waiting for the daily pickup.

Maybe they take more precautions in more crime-prone areas, but it always amazes how often I see a UPS or Fedex sitting with the back overhead door wide open, full of packages large and small, while the driver is inside picking up or dropping stuff off.

I wouldn't give up yet. I shipped a stock by USPS about a year ago, paid extra for insurance and tracking. USPS records show it was delivered but the guy who paid for it did not get it. I tried to file an insurance claim with USPS and was told that since they documented it as delivered, they considered it delivered and I had no claim.

I contacted the PD in the town I shipped to. A local detective took my info incuding the tracking number and made a few calls. Seems USPS found the stock somewhere and delivered it 3 weeks late. Even though their documentation showed it was delivered weeks earlier.

I had FedEx lose a few pieces to an HK 416. The driver (a sub-contractor for FedEx) pulled in and searched through his truck. He finally said "I have to go get you package, I left it at the wrong house". He never returned and later the evening it was marked as delivered at my side door. My house has no side door. I called FedEx and they finally sent a supervisor to retrieve it from the wrong house, two days later. They were going to just file a claim until Hk got involved.

It does happen, and it is horribly frustrating. I hope everything works out.

They would have simply questioned the driver but it seems he took the day off to go shooting.:mad:

Sounds like a job for BATFE to me. We are talking about a missing firearm here, after all! Just think, it could turn up in a crime scene in Mexico!

Is there any chance you would contact Law Enforcement? It may be petty theft, but with all the hullabaloo lately about how dangerous guns are, you would think the press and LE would not want an illegal shotgun wandering around on the streets, now would you?

My experience with the UPS drivers has been nothing short of stellar. A few years ago, for example, a UPS driver found my wallet laying in the middle of the road. Apparently, in my perpetual state of fog and confusion, I left it on top of my car and drove off. It made it about 3 miles before falling off, and subsequently being found by the driver, who brought it right to my home. You can't imagine my relief ... and not one thin dime was missing!

I thought about that, but I'm neither the shipper nor the receiver; I'm nothing but a "middle man," and don't even have the authority to initiate a claim. Besides, I think the police would likely call it an "inside job" beyond their purview. I believe they'd do little more than take a report and put the gun on the stolen registry.

Kinda makes one wonder how gun control will solve anything when LE won't take gun theft seriously, doesn't it? :banghead: :cuss: :cuss:

I wonder if the local ATF office would care to look into it? You say you're only the "middle man", not the shipper or receiver, but you ARE the purchaser and therefore the owner, I would imagine. But maybe not since you haven't done the 4473 yet?

You're in a tough spot, my friend, I don't envy you one bit. Your money is gone and your gun may never show, but I'll keep my fingers crossed for you.

That's how I lost a magazine to my chinese AK, fortunatly it was a promag but still...they also lost my Shamegh (Arabian type scarf worn alot by Special Ops).

If it was shipped by an FFL there is a form that they specifically have that they use to report guns lost by common carrier.

Edit.... Was shipped by a private individual. They need to file a claim with UPS. It's possible that the receiving FFL can file the report with ATF but I'm not an 01 so I can't say for sure. I'm an 03 and had some similar happen to me as the seller. I started an investigation with UPS and they declared it lost a few days later. I notified ATF and miracles of miracles two days later UPS finds it...

I'd say with high confidence that its gone for good, a stolen item. BTW, I've never trusted UPS, much prefer fedex.

I don't think we're in Kansas anymore, Toto!

Moments ago I got a most welcome e-mail from UPS, informing me that after a 15-day, 2600 mile detour my Remington 1100 finally showed up ... in Kansas! They're overnighting it to my FFL tomorrow (I didn't have the sand to ask them to Fedex it!), and with any luck, I'll have it in my hands before the weekend. Man, am I relieved! i suppose much of the delay was caused by the terrible weather they're experiencing in the Midwest; but of course, who'd have thought that it would go from Pittsburgh to New York by way of Kansas City?

I thank you all for your encouragement and support, and, well, listening to my whining! I'll post pics as soon as I can!

sounds like an all too common case of it fell behind something in the big truck, and wasn't located until it was completely emptied and someone with a clue saw it. I've had it happen before with an RMA'd tv. VA to NJ by way of KS, TX and WY.
