Hi folks, need some advice. Am getting rid of my Ruger 96/22 mag and am looking at a trade for a Remington 597 22mag.
Are the Remingtons any good?

I've had two .22 LR 597s, good guns. No experience with the magnums, though.

I had a Model 597; worst (and most frustrating), gun I have ever encountered. After countless hours spent on possible fixes, tweaking, and way too much TLC, I still could not get it to go through one complete magazine without some sort of major mishap that would bring everything to a screeching halt. I couldn't even hazard a guess in terms of its potential accuracy because I could never string more than three shots together on paper without stopping to clear whatever jam that just occured.
To top it all off, it performed its worst with Remington ammo.

Good luck finding a 597MAG... IIRC, they were recalled a couple years ago due to some sort of safety issue (cracked receiver?). Not sure if they make them any more... I could be wrong, but if you go with one, I'd make sure that any safety issues it might have had been fixed before using it.

The 597 in 17 HMR was the problem child with the cracked receivers. I have had a completely different experience with my 597 in 22 MAG than Bannockburn has with his. It will eat almost anything and shoot it accurately. It is more accurate than any of my bolt 22 MAG's and I own 4 of those also. I own 5 MAGS for it and can load all of them into the rifle one after the other as fast as possible and shoot up a box of ammo in nothing flat without problems even with mixed ammo. I may just be lucky this time but I am more than happy with mine.
I would try it with whatever ammo is available before I purchased it if there were any doubts. YMMV

I traded a guy out of a 597 magnum and it's a danged accurate, reliable firearm regardless of the naysayers. It's 1.5 MOA at 100 yards accurate, shoots flat, and feeds any and everything except Winchester Dynapoint which is loaded too weak to cycle the bolt. CCI is mostly what I shoot and I have some Hornady around here. Now that we have acreage in the country, this gun is pretty handy as a go to for vermin. Another thing I like about it is it's a full sized adult gun. It fits like a centerfire.

The magazines can be touchy but if you load them per the instructions and make sure they are completely inserted they work fine. I have had mine for about 5 years and am still happy with it.

I did not like mine. Jammed pretty frequently and had a bad trigger.

Thanks for your feedback. The trade is done. Since I am in Alberta and the remington is 3000 miles east, a certain amount of good faith is required
I found the feedback to be similar to what I have read and experienced with most rimfire semis. Unless there is something physically wrong with the gun or the mag, it is a matter of scrupulous cleaning and finding the right ammo for the particular firearm.
I use Remington yellow jackets in my Challenger and CCI stingers in my Sig mosquito - no problems with either one. I use the bulk stuff in my old bolt action Cooey and my Winchester model 90.
Experience has shown that if I take good care of my guns as I would any other tool, they won't let me down.

I don't think you'll find it real ammo picky. CCI maximag works great in mine as does everything I've tried BUT Winchester Dynapoint. But, every rimfire is an individual.
A 35 dollar (from midwayusa.com ) volquartsen hammer totally fixed the hard trigger in mine. It's wonderful, now. Install was super easy.

I probably would have put some work into getting it to run right, but I found over time that I just didn't have much use for a .22WMR.
