Dear THR:
If you were choose only one handgun, which one would you pick as your all round gun depending upon your needs?

Please state your reasoning for which you chose a particular handgun.

Let's have gun!

Bought 4th gen. G20. I can shoot .40S&W equivalent or full power 10mm loads. I like everything about this gun. Great universal pistol.

Don't see a list but if you want an all around Handgun he best choice is a 4" K rame smith .357. A classic that will fill the needs of anyone east of the Miss. Small enough to carry in the city and powerful enough with the right loads to take game in the woods.

Not sexy or trendy, just solid perforamnce and versatility.

I'll be the first obligitory Glock fanboy. I would choose my G22 as my all round handgun. It's so simplistic to manipulate and has a consistant triggerpull every time.

You're not asking for much, are you? I mean, the reason they make 4 trillion models and variants of models is that they are all good at different things. But I'll play. Things I do with handguns:

  • CCW
  • Target practice
  • Deer hunting
  • Competitive shooting

For the purposes of this game, we'll pretend I'm not a cowboy shooter, as one pistol won't get you in that door, and a cowboy gun is pretty sub-optimal for CCW.

Since pretty much anything can be used for target shooting, that basically leaves the fundamental dichotomy to be resolved, of finding a good deer gun that can also be carried. To my mind, that means a medium barreled .44 revolver, such as an S&W 629 in 5" or 6", or a 5.5" Redhawk. Medium barreled, because shorter than 5" isn't legal for deer in Ohio, and longer than 6" gets silly for CCW, (because a 3 lb magnum's not already silly.) A revolver, because of the versatility in handling multiple loading levels.

That leaves competition as the tie-breaker. While neither is exactly ideal for USPSA Revolver, they both would work. The edge does go to the Smith, I think, as the Redhawk DA trigger can't be gotten as nice.

Those are my thoughts, anyhow.

'All-around' is a vague term. Basically it just means a gun that covers an individual's needs.

For my needs, my CZ P01 is perfect. SD/HD, competition, range gun.

I can't do it. I want at least 3 semiautos and a revolver or two. If I could only have one, I would grudgingly take a 3rd gen G20SF or G21SF.

My first pick would be the Glock 20 for it's simplicity, versatility, accuracy and power.

My second choice would be the CZ SP01. Accurate accurate accurate!

I like the idea of a S&W 19 or a GP 100. The .357/.38 versatility is good.

I also have a PO P16 in .40 caliber AND a .357 SIG barrel. It would be a good autoloader for almost everything. (And, YES, I can and do carry it concealed sometimes.)

10mm in a reliable auto platform. For me, that is an EAA Elite Match. The 10mm properly loaded can approach the .41 magnum and exceeds full .357 magnum loads.

Lots of bullet versatility too. Can shoot 135 grain Noslers at 1600 FPS or 220 grain hard leadcast at 1200 FPS.

Just one, eh?

I think my S&W 1911PD, scandium frame bobtail commander-ish size, with a extra .22LR "top half" would do me pretty well.

For home defense, concealed carry, hunting, and everything between it would be either my Ruger GP100 or my Springfield Armory XD 45.

my needs for a pistol are simple CC and my LCP is the only gun I carry every day.

I could survive without a sidearm as long as I can have a long gun also, I have other tools for deer hunting so I could do without that handgun to.

Take away CC and it would be either my BDA or 4566 depending on how I feel that day.

H&K P30 9mm

because you'd have to beat the readheaded stepchild out of it 50x over before it'll hiccup.
