Comcast bans Gun commercials

Does this not involves some First right or discrimination against business, thus restraint of free trade?

What about shows sponsored by gun companies?

How would this affect hunting shows and their advertisements.

I'm sure they still broadcast all kinds of violent content and pornography, however.

+1. About 50% of American television is effectively advertising, or at least free publicity, for firearms. As much as the twits in the entertainment industry might wring their hands about guns, if guns just didn't exist unemployment in Hollywood would probably double or triple overnight.

It only affects ads sold and locally inserted by Comcast's "Spotlight" sales organization. Not ads broadcast by OLN, Sportsman Channel, etc.

Even though Comcast owns NBC Sports Network (formerly Versus), something tells me they aren't booting the high-dollar national advertisers off their hunting shows (my guess would be that tampons and soap ads aren't going to pay the bills during hunting programming).

If Comcast is a privately owned company (Are they, I don't know) then no.
The Constitution applies to government only for the most part.

If you walk into some store and start ranting about abortions or homosexuals or whatever topic. You can't sue them for violating your right to speak and demonstrate when they call the cops and have you escorted out.

Comcast owns NBC now and they had been public before that for quite a while. And again, we're talking primarily about "local" ads, ads for your local gun range, gun shop or whatever. This does more to hurt your local firearms related small businesses than anything (assuming they advertised on cable to begin with).

How much gun advertising was on cable TV anyway? It seems to me that this was not a very cost-effective medium for guns. Your advertising dollars would be better spent on specialized print media or -- maybe -- AM radio. Or sponsorships at shooting events. So we're looking at an issue that's largely symbolic.

If you want to dictate

If someone really wants to have the ability to dictate what kind of advertisments a company will allow or won't, become a majority stock holder and get a seat on the BOD because it's not going to happen any other way. Corporations make decisions based on profits and dropping a few advertisers in lieu of losing hundreds is nothing more than a well thought out business decision.

The era of making decisions based on statesmanship is long gone. Congress and our own representatives refusal to compromise is living proof of that.

If anyone really thinks that Comcast is going to be that drastically affected by losing a few thousand customers nation wide, they have to be naive. How many of you actually have more than one choice in the first place?

Some may live in an area where they have multiple choices when it comes to high speed internet and cable TV, but most do not. Some areas of the country still don't have the option of even acquiring cable TV or high speed internet.

When I read the kind of posts that some people here write, It amazes me that they are even able to post them on the net, because if they actually followed up with every threat they made, they would not only living off the grid but also living in the 18th century.

I had more outages with Comcast in a month than I've had with my current provider in 3 years. Glad I left their crap product a long time ago.

In my area you either get comcast or knology. Glad I have knology lol. Comcast has poor service to go along with their anti 2a attitude. It's too bad that satellites go out every time that it rains or I would go that route.

Comcast is the ONLY cable provider where I live. Satellite does not work good in my neighborhood because of surrounding hills and Uverse is not available here. It sucks. They know they are your only option and could care less about outages that last for hours.

But when the power comes out they are the first on the scene to put small honda generator at the base of a pole and run a cord up to their amplifier. No power for 9 days but they kept refueling that generator to keep their signal amp running!

oh and people that had whole house gensets reported that the cable still didnt work until mainline power was restored!

In summary, comcast sucks but they have a monopoly in the area so they are the only choice.

This is way overblown. If your dish is properly aligned you will very rarely lose signal. I'd wager to be the downtime on most satellite systems is usually quite a bit less than most cable systems. After having satellite, I'd never go back to cable. Pretty much everyone I know that's switched feels the same way. The only people I know that try to tell me cable is better than satellite have never had satellite. Yet somehow they always seem to know all about how often it goes out when it rains as well as all of the other rumors.

I lose signal for about 10 minutes during SEVERE thunderstorms. At which time, I can still watch anything on my DVR.

I make it a point to keep my television viewing to a minimum and when I do watch, I watch content that I've recorded on my Tivo and fast-forward through the commercials. Thankfully I've gotten out of the habit of mindlessly sitting in the television watching whatever happens to be on.

I banned Comcrap 5 years ago so I suppose this is fair.

I work for Comcast and they are a top notch company to work for. They provide a great product on the cutting edge of technology. The only anti gun thing I have ever seen is not allowing guns on the premises. Not a shocker for business locations. I have never seen a gun commercial in all the time I have watched TV. They have issued no communications on any gun or 2nd amendment stance in either direction. They are pro making money from advertising.

By frequently paying attention to certain tv news segments and reading the front sections of newspapers (plus THR etc for five years), many of us picked up on the clear "hints" before the '08 and '12 elections. I have nothing to do with Facebook, Twitter etc.

Mass media also gave increasingly clearer warnings about stronger political and media reactions immed. after every massacre. Just after Aurora, CNN's Piers Morgan (who was fired from the BBC) began his crusade against "the assault rifle" or AR-15.
The chain of recent massacres which began in Tucson-Aurora-Portland gave us plenty of warning to buy both ammo and a desired gun.

Any one of those -long before Newtown- could have led to the present ammo drought, and the intense struggles to preserve gun rights.

Various regular hints/cautionary advice resulted in having heaps of centerfire ammo (plus 2,000 .22LR).
Things seem to have worked out pretty well via those info sources, thanks to paying attention to certain aspects of mass media
and THR/Thefiringline etc.

Does Comcast offer the Outdoor Channel? If so, will they cut entire shows, like Guns and Ammo TV, or just commercials for shows? [ OR do nothing ? ] Comcast is NOT the cable provider in my area; so I don't have an option or keeping or dropping them for 2nd Amendment reasons.

Such is life, I can choose to support them or use dialup as those are my 2 choices. It's easy to rant when you have other options available, many don't.
