Helllo all thanks for all the Insight, Now after a great deal of research I have found out what the problem is,after casting the chamber and measuring the exact chamber length to the lans WA LA! this rifle has no free bore with any load COAL, every load COAL in all 4 of my bullet loading manuals (Nosler#7, Sierra, Lyman 49, and Hornady) of witch I have bullets, The measurement for all of these bullets off the Lans is 0.001 that is just like sitting on the Lans, Longer story short I reduced the loads by 4gr. and seated the bullet to 0.10 off the lans and started load development from there, I now have the rifle shooting less than 1" groups at 400 yards. Thanks again for all the advice; Hopefully this might help someone that has the same problem with a new Savage Mod. 111! Happy shooting, Ray

Before i got the proper tools, I used the poor mans method. Resized a case, used a black permanent marker to mark a bullet, slightly inserted said bullet into case mouth then chambered the round. Ejected the case and measured. Got my C.O.L. For my Savage -06 and built loads from that measurement. Moved the C.O.L. In a bit to find the sweet spot.
 
I have almost the same rifle and had just reached the same conclusion by using a Hornady OAL gage.

When loaded to specs, my rounds were into the lands by about .001. I loaded some .025 shorter and will look for an improvement.

My problem was hard extraction with starting and just over starting loads. I did not even get to looking for accuracy because I was too worried about the cause of the hard extraction.

The theory I am working under was the lack of jump raised pressure enough to cause the extraction problems.

I am, overall, not a happy Savage owner right now, as the other QA problems with this rifle add up to a lot of frustration.

FWIW I own several Savages and they are not short chambered. That said they are all older rifles, non acu-trigger other than the 300 WSM version. I have been able to use the published OAL as a start and not had any pressure/accuracy problems. I wonder if this is something with newer versions that have been produced for some reason.

QuickLoad users have said, seating into the lands/rifling can raise pressure 10,000 PSI. RC had the answer in the other thread.

You either had to seat shorter then the Hodgdon 3.550" OAL with the Hornady 250?
Or you are probably into the rifling leade with the Nosler.

If you did seat shorter then 3.550", it decreased case capacity because of the longer bullet.

I can shoot a one hole group at 300 years & it only takes me one shot to do it. :)


My Savage .223 has a tight change & short lead also.
