M1 Garand Price

I walked into my LGS today, and saw an M1 Garand on the rack. All the tag said was: "Springfield M1 Garand. 7.62. Match Sights. Heavy Barrel. $2200".
I know absolutely nothing about the M1, never touched one, don't know what the fit and finish is supposed to be like, nothing. The wood appeared to have some sort of high gloss finish on it, and the muzzle appeared to have a tiny bit of rust on it. Other than that, I didn't look too close. Didn't want to pick it up for closer inspection and do something stupid and end up buying a $2200 rifle. So, my question is, is that a fair price? It seems kind of high to me, but I'm no expert.

you can buy a Garand chambered in .308 with a brand new barrel and brand new stock for $1000 from CMP

Springfield? which Springfield IL or MA if the serial number is 7million or more this is NOT a military surplus rifle and nowhere near worth $2200.
National Match, Navy Trophy M1s from the Springfield in MA and a serial number under 7million with the proper documentation then $2200 may be a good deal.

I don't know if it was Springfield IL or MA, or what the s/n range was. I didn't touch anything other than the tag. It didn't mention anything on the tag about it being special/rare in any way.

Heavy barrel would keep you out of "As Issued" competitions along with the match sights. and the 7.62x51 caliber. If that is important to you?
www.cmp.com has the real info and M1 rifles. But the last I heard they are back ordered 1200 orders.
Can you go to the North Store in Port Clinton/Camp Perry?

Sorry about the confusion, I am not interested in buying one (right now, money won't allow). I just thought it seemed kinda pricey, and wasn't sure if I, or the LGS was being unreasonable.

The RiverRat is right. Go with the CMP and you won't regret it. It is a known quality vs not knowing what you will get with the one from your LGS.

Really depends on the rifle. A complete NM rear sight assemble runs around $200 with a NM front sight coming in around $35 (give or take). When they say heavy barrel I would assume what I always called a full contour verse a GI contour. A really good high end barrel in full contour like a Kreiger typically runs around $500. When a full contour barrel is used it requires hogging some wood out of the rear hand guard.

It always goes back to the actual rifle. Without seeing the rifle and knowing more about it there is no way to say what the worth actually is.
