I was hoping that somebody could point me in the right direction. I am interested in a .30-06 rifle that accepts detachable magazines with at least a 10rd capacity. I don't care if it is semi-auto or bolt-action but if the latter it needs to be available in a left-hand version.

Not a lot out there to meet that criteria...some high-end precision rifles with detachable mag kits, and things like the semiauto repro BARs. Why would it need to be .30-06 and not .308? There are a whole lot more options in .308, and the ballistics are basically the same.

If money is no problem (and you can actually find one) then google "Cobb MCR-300". It's an AR-10 type rifle chambered in 30-06 that accepts modified 20 round BAR magazines. I think Cobb made 100 of them in 2006.

I would go with Remington 7600 as they have a floating barrel, (pump gun) and will utilize a 10 round mag available on the police patrol model made by Checkmate Industries on Long Island.
the Remington 760 might be had a little cheaper and they hold up a long time.

Do not even consider a Rem 742. About 500 rounds and they will go down on you. The 760 however will run 12,000 or better.

Rem 7600 or 7400

I have a few 760s & 7600s, and one 7400. They are great sporting arms and, especially the pumps would be phenominal in a protracted austere situation (be it a camping/hunting trip or something of science fiction). The free floated barrels, etc +1 on everything hummer said. Get the steel 10rd magazines from triple K, and if you want a pistol grip buy a choate (or any other) 20guage remington stock with the features you desire. The recievers are the exact same size.

760 in -06, low pro scope... Yup, that's the ticket.

Don't be skeered by the slightly rattly nature of some of the used ones.

Dthunter - Thanks for that link to Elisio. There is some outstanding loading information there even if one wasn't interested in the rifle itself. And - the rifle's pretty cool too.

Not to keep being a downer, but I would really question what the purpose of detachable mags on a bolt gun is, especially with a 10-round minimum size. How many mags are you going to buy? If it's only one or two (given the steep price tag of spares), what does that really get you? Most of the conversions kits are of dubious reliability, especially with 10-round mags.

I have a few of the Eagle 10-rounders for my 7600, and they work fine. i can't legally hunt with them in AZ, but I'll bet I could repel a bunch of boarders.
I know it shouldn't work this way, but the old girl gives me 1"- 1 1/4" groups with just about any good 180 gr. ammunition.

742/7400/7600, etc. all take the same mag by caliber family...

All the calibers based on .30-06 (.35 Whelan, .270 Winchester, etc.) take the same mag in spite of what is stamped on it...

Same with the .308 family (.243 etc.)...

As for the "500rd" 'limit' on the 742, in my experience it's a tad higher than that before the bolt rails batter themselves into uselessness...The rails can be slicked up once, but I do agree if you are looking for a gun to shoot 100rds every week, look elsewhere...

No problem at all! The Elisio tubegun chassis is a great platform!
I had one built for a friend of mine. I am just finished working up loads for him, and mbe stretching it out to 1000+ yards.

There is some great load info for sure! I will be getting my Custom build back in a couple of months. I have gone with a blue printed and sleeved Rem 700 action, choate custom tactical stock, Sightron SIII, 6.5X20x50 scope, 1: 30" shilen select match barrel (1:10" twist) in 30-06, & 1: 30" shilen select match barrel in 280 Rem (1:8" twist).
I am really excited to try my first switch barrel platform!

if you guys want to get crazy with the eliseo, check out defiance actions. the neat thing about eliseo chassis is that they use a doughnut-shaped lug, unlike the standard remington 700 one that goes straight down. i.e. the action is contacting the chassis on top/bottom/left/right equally.

anyway, defiance makes an action with a round integral recoil lug for the eliseo. heavy as a brick, but dang is it solid.

here's a link http://defiancemachine.com/mutant-action/
