P220 or G30sf as a duty gun?

A new way of looking at the rules where I work gives us the option of carrying personal firearms as long as they are mechanically sound in a duty caliber and we of course pass our quarterly qualls. currently carry a g23. I have never had problem making passing scores with it but have never been all that accurate with it either. A buddy of mind who lost his g22 in a fire replaced it with a Sig & loves it. I have actually qualified with my Sig p6 for off duty usually carry either a lcp or g27.

I think am am ready switch over from 40 to 45 because of the softer recoil and bigger bullet. I have never shot a 45 in anything but a 1911 and thought about using my colt for work but its too heavy to tote around 50 hours a week plus I don't want to scuff it up even if it is stainless.

This has me looking at the Sig P220 with nights for 950$ or A G30 for640 ( 500 for gun at the blue label price & 150 for the shop to add HD night sights ).

I would like to hear from those who own or who have shot both both blocks and sigs in 45 acp.

I DO NOT want to start a Sig v Glock debate. I know there are other options but I personally have narrowed it down to these. I think they are both quality duty grade arms makers which is why I am really on the fence over this.

Based on my experience with a personally owned p6 and g27/g22 I have to say I like the feel of the Sig better but do not care for that long first trigger pull.

So far most people I have talked like the Sig 220 for the inherant accuracy.
 
If you are a Police Officer you may purchase a new Sig or Glock direct from them, You will be saving alot of money doing it that way. Just go to their websites and look for individual purchases by officers and click on the link. with sig you can send it to your dept or your local FFL it's your choice. I believe the P220 was around $700 officers price last time I looked. I am partial to sigs. I carried a P220 for over 20 years on duty. Good luck
 
I've owned one P220. It was much more accurate than it should have been, I can see no reason for the Sig to be that accurate, but they are. I do not interface well with Glocks. They seem very awkward to me, & are difficult to shoot well (for me). So, I've never owned one, & never will. In a polymer pistol, S&W's M&P is hard to beat. The ergonomics are perfect for me. I've never owned a G-30, but I have had a P220 in the past. I currently own a Sig 226 as well as Glock 17's, 19's, a G-26, 20 and 21. Other than a more compact size I can't see how the G-30 would differ much from my G-21

For open carry, duty use I'd prefer the 21 to the 30.

I like both Sig and Glock. Gotta admit I "LIKE" the Sig better, but I don't shoot it a bit better. The Glocks do everything I can do with my Sig for a lot less money, less weight and with more ammo on board. $150 for night sights seem too high.
 
A full sized P220 (not sure if that's what we're discussing, I'll admit) probably won't be that much less heavy than a 1911. If that's your concern, the Glock 30 is the no-brainer choice.

I would pick G21. The Sig-Saurer 220 is over-priced Gen III Smith & Wesson with outdated eight round magazine capacity. It's hard to believe but in past some Euro cops had to rely on 9x19 P220.:barf:
 
I would go with a Sig P-220 as I had one some years ago and besides being reliable, durable, and easy to shoot, it was amazingly accurate for just about everyone who ever used it. With the same ammo it was could match shot for shot with a Colt Gold Cup I had at the time. I also have tried the Glock G30SF and design-wise it's just not a good fit ergonomically with me.
 
The GLOCK 30sf is not going to recoil less than your G23, and the SIG is going to weigh more...
 
I am not a police officer but I do and have carried all the above mentioned CCWs. I like the G30, I haven't tried the G30s, with the lighter trigger it is safe but more accurate than with the standard 5.5# pull. The Sig P220 is a great weapon although it has less mag capacity than the G30. The double action pull it not my favorite but it can be found in a SAO if you prefer the C&L'd carry mode. I have not experienced any failures with my P220. The 1911 is a real favorite of mine esp. in the 5" bbl. I love the trigger but the reliability is slightly less than the P220.

Whatever weapon you decide to carry--become ultra-practiced with it's functioning and handling. We can get used to the trigger pull of any weapon we choose and knowledge of the pistols function lend itself to maximum safety. I agree that .45ACP is a favorite round of mine. It's not uncomfortable to practice with and carries quite a hello at impact.
 
Honestly I think your best bet is to either keep the G23, or switch to the G22 and call it good. While I would feel comfortable carrying either the P220 or G30 on duty, I don't see the logic in giving up capacity and recoil to switch from .40 to .45.
 
While felt recoil is a subjective matter, I found the Glock 30S to have less felt recoil than a 1997 vintage Sig P220 I shot, using the same ammunition.

The Sig had a better trigger, but other than that......I'd go with the Glock 30S. Accuracy was not noticeably different between the two examples I shot. Good luck! :)
 
I can't imagine why you would choose the G30 over the G21 for a duty weapon.

I can see the argument for a SIG P220 if you prefer that type of weapon as it may have features you prefer.
 
I don't like the bottom of the grip on the G21. It sticks out too far back for my taste and changes my point of aim.

The G30SF works great. It functions fine with G21 mags without any grip adaptors. It is a smooth recoiling gun and much less snappy than .40s generally. It is really accurate. The 30 packs nicely in a Safariland 6360. Good luck finding a good holster that will accommodate a light if that is a consideration.

The G30SF is a good all around, 7 day a week gun. With 9 round mags it hides nicely IWB. 10 round standard mags are fine for normal carry, and G21 mags are nice for backup magazines. 9 round mags and 10 round mags are difficult when it comes to topping off, but the 13 rounders don't have that problem.

I like Sigs in DAK, but they are generally heavier. I used to carry a 229R DAK. My biggest issue is that they are really wide compared to even the .45 Glocks, which makes them harder to wear IWB, and you give up versatility of capacity.

Fwiw my brother in law was up this weekend and we hit the range (nypd). He has always carried the Glock. He shot my P220, after his Glock and shot it insanely well at 10yds. He wanted to head to Sig (15 minutes frm my house) to pick one up, until I reminded him it was Sat. That is just a one off example, but...
 
Rent both at the range and see which you like better.

Don't shoot a ton of one gun then switch to the other, shoot one mag of the sig, then one mag of the glock.

If one shoots better, you have a winner. If you can't see any difference, then pick which has the best ergonomics. Do you like firearms with a safety?

I hate the idea of a safety switch on a carry pistol, I want to pull and shoot, if I was in the line of duty. Nothing to worry about except sight picture and trigger pull. But to each their own.
 
Give the Glock a try. Its lower bore axis and better trigger, plus Glock 21 mags as extras far outweigh the Sig 220's features and benefits. You'll find the G30 to be about the softest-shooting .45acp you ever shot, and plenty accurate, too.
 
I own both. Sigs are by far my favorite and I've got over 10,000 rounds through my 220. I've taken a lot of classes with it (mostly Awerbuck). It's what I keep next to the shotgun for home defense. Having said that, I dislike that DA pull on it and feel as if it slows me down on making a first shot.

I think after 10,000 rounds with many purposefully on DA I can say that I'm never going to be comfortable with that first shot out of a Sig. Becuase of this, I would carry the Glock 30. I like the consistent trigger pull. If the DA/SA doesn't bother you (which per your post is the issue) then I'd go with a Sig; otherwise the Glock 30.

I've recently moved to a more friendly county in CA and I plan to apply for a CCW. A glock 30SF is what I will carry becuase of the more consistent trigger even though I like Sigs better in every other respect.
 
If the choice is strictly G30 or P220, the P220 is my vote. Not sure why you'd pick the G30 as a possible service pistol. It's OC.
