H. Beam Piper wrote a science-fiction short story back in 1948, called "Police Operation." It's up on Gutenberg, now, and worth a read.

One plot complication was when some Pennsylvania hunters encountered a disguised paratime agent, and questioned his rifle. The Prop Department had given him a "period correct" bolt action hunting rifle, but it was a 1937 Sharps in .235 Ultraspeed-Express, some a timeline that diverged at the Second War Between the States...

I first read the story in an anthology in 1972 or so, and vowed if I ever made a 6mm wildcat, I'd call it the .235 Ultraspeed-Express.

Piper didn't mention any ballistic data, but when I first encountered the .244 Holland & Holland Magnum, I thought of Piper's story.

"AP Mark 8".

What can I say...I'm a Sailor, through-and-through!

For those who are curious...that's 262,269,785.4 ft-lbs of muzzle energy.

:D:D

(Not exactly a "personal defense round", though...)

Ultra Mag!

I load up some 22-250 I call prarie dog dynomite. It blows crows to smitherenes as well. It's like looking for those poor souls at the fertilizer plant disaster when you go to investigate the hit. With crows it usually produces a big cloud of stuff.

Triton Quik Shok

I still have a box of those in my safe. They don't offer enough penetration for a self defense situation but I used one to take down a rabid racoon once and it lived up to it's name.
