Where To Find Powder & Caps

Powder, Inc. sells lots as small as 5 lbs, you can mix and match the different powders, so you could get 2 lbs of Triple 7, a pound of Swiss, a pound of Olde Eynsford, and another pound of whatever.

If CCI No. 11's worked, CCI No. 10's probably won't. They're quite a bit smaller and will probably result in reliability problems.

If you are going up to Oklahoma City, H&H gun range has Swiss and Goex.

CCI #11 and #11 magnum appear to be the same size, the magnum just has more power to light substitutes. You might as well always get the magnums as far as I can tell... until you just said that they're harder to set off. I've never seen that but it's worth knowing, thanks. I've never needed the extra power in a cap and ball revolver since those have relatively direct ignition - it's more of a rifle-with-a-drum thing.

The Remingtons are basically the same width as the CCI #11s, just the length varies. I tend to use them interchangeably frankly. The Remingtons are definitely softer and easier to set off than any of the CCIs. I had a 1851 with a marginal spring that would set off Remington and not CCI.

CCI #10s are kind of useless for the most part... unless you're running factory cap and ball nipples which can run pretty small. but all the quality aftermarket nipples seem to be based on #11. So I bought a ton of #10s initially and then ended up hardly using them once I started changing out nipples. Whoops.

I've ordered caps from Dixie recently with success (and hazmat!) but if I'm near a BassPro they usually have at least some Remingtons at a decent price so I'm *trying* to slowly stock up that way to avoid paying hazmat. Unfortunately it's not very close so I don't make it out that way very often.

Some you can get in under 5 pound lots, others require a 25 pound min. Also local gunshops, pawn shops, ranges, some events, gun shows and the like often will have black powder.

Another source is to find a local muzzle loading club, call them up and ask about joining, bring what you have and there typically is several types of powder that members will have. I am always handing out powder for people to try.

In dire times of political distress, i.e. today, caps can be hard to find and it never hurts to order lots of 1,000. It is also worth noting that many will say get the #11 magnum over the regular #11's. There is a hazmat shipping fee so make it worth while and order bulk.

You can often times change nipples cheaper than you can locate caps so it is well worth finding *SEVERAL* good set of nipples.

Although they are rather high on most items, Gander Mountain carries Remington primers and I bought 10 packs of #10 primers from them about two months ago. They fit the original Ruger Old Army nipples and the ones I got from TOW. They were out of the 10s the first time I stopped by but had #11s. When I went back they had #10s but were out of the #11s. It's pot luck.
If you can get together with several other people and buy 25 lbs. of powder total, the price is reduced plus you only have one hazmat fee. It's perfectly legal.

I got Remington caps and some Goex fffg at The Bass Pro on Lake Ray Hubbard. There is also a Bass Pro down in Buda near Austin. You have to ask for the Goex, as it is stored "in a safe, in another safe, in a vault" in the back. I live 'bout an hour and a half from that Bass Pro now, and none of the local places around here carry real BP due to the storage regulations. As little as I have been able to shoot lately, which is none really, that pound will probably last me a while... As far as Swiss or the other, I really don't know. Good luck on your search.
