Predicting the ammo/component shortage will be over soon. I've finally succumbed to bidding / buying on gunbroker. I'm new to re-loading and after looking at my press, etc I got for Christmas, I've gotten to the point of antsyness where I really want to get going on 30-06 and .300 Win Mag load developments for hunting this fall. My luck being what it is everything will come back in stock at Midway and for lower prices than I'll get off the auction site. Thought I'd give you all the head's up regarding my luck.

:)

I'm not sure what experience gives this measure of confidence, but I'm hoping for all our sakes that you are right!

My local stores have not had a problem at all keeping .30-06 and .300 Win Mag in stock during these times....

Maybe I'm a pessimist, but I don't think we can see the light at the end of the tunnel just yet (with regards to ammo availability).

It's not going to end here until the winter, maybe 2014. The wholesaler supplying Alaska has jacked up prices and the dealers are having to decide whether to buy and be accused of gouging by the customers or just let the items sit in Seattle. Any new stock is getting grabbed up very quickly.

Saw a box full of Pmags on the counter of my local gun store yesterday (Kansas), so that's an indication that the pipeline is opening a bit. Ammo is still scarce but did see a fair quantity of .45 and .223 in a shop last week. I think the question now is, at what price will you start to buy ammo if it is available. Before the craziness, the last case of .223 I bought was $175 for 500, or .35 per shot. Recently it's been around $1 a per shot. I don't expect it to return to the .35 range, and think I will begin to buy again at around .50 per shot.

.30-06 and .300 win mag are not used by semi auto owners that much. Im thinking calibers like .22 lr, 9 mm, .40, .45, .223 and .308 are the ones that will be low or expensive for a while

When I can go to Powder Valley's website and order powders and primers with no issues, THEN I'll believe the crisis is over.

I was speaking more of bullets and powders for these calibers. 4895, 4841, 4350 and .30 cal bullets.

He's in Wyoming. They use ought six and .300 Winmag like we use x39 and .223. :D

Seriously though, '06 and .300 Winmag are two calibers that seem fairly easy to find locally.

Who was it was saying he should build an AR in .270 so he'd have some ammo? :D

Or Varget. But, this makes me even more curious about what experience you base your optimism on. FWIW, I'm rooting for you! I'm in the market for .308 bullets and powder right now also. I've got some on hand, but not necessarily the specific components I desire. So I would love to see the market come around on these soon.

Of course 300 WinMag is easy to find when prices run from $1.80-$3.00+ a round. Hey at $62 for a box of 20 one is not going to be doing a lot of shooting.

I went to a few stores in the area recently. No backorder stickers on ammo and display cases that actually had inventory in them. It was very encouraging to see that as soon as either place put out a box of .22LR that it wasn't spinning off the shelf. And the only ammunition they limited was .22LR at 3 tins of 333 per person with no limits on 9mm or .40S&W.

[/I'm not sure what experience gives this measure of confidence, but I'm hoping for all our sakes that you are right! UOTE]
But I don't think you are, as long as talk of Gun Control stays in the News and Social Media, people will continue to Panic Buy and Hoard what they think will become unobtainable for them in the future and the Internet Entrepreneurs will continue to thrive.:banghead:

Was on the west side of the "People's Republik of Lawrence", Kansass, this evening so stopped by the wallywerld there. One lone box of .380 Hydra Shok hollow points on the shelf along with the usual suspects of shotgun shells. Don't own a 380 so let it ride.
Don't think the shortage is quite over yet everywhere...

I'm not holding my breath on the availability of anything gun related. I finally found some of my much sought after 175gr SMK bullets at Sportsman's Warehouse the other day, though the prices seem to keep inching up on these... I swear it's the last time I'm buying them there (close to $40/box now).

As for other stuff, I'm still waiting for Midway USA to fulfill my backorder of 2 BX-25 magazines (an order I placed before Christmas that they originally claimed would be filled around 12/28/12, then 1/6/13, then 1/18/13... and then they had no idea when I'd get them, and still don't).

I'd like to think that things are going to start getting better, but I think I'll believe it when I see it!

Powder valley just had 175 gr SMKs for $30/100. They should still be in stock.

Just listened to John Lott on "Coast to Coast". NICS checks are up almost 100% (over 2 million in December) it stands to reason that this added to the current shortage.

on a road trip this past weekend I stopped inprobably 30 different Walmart stores.I also checked out a couple of Dick's Sporting Goodsand one other store whose name I forget. I snagged a grand total of 3 boxes of 9mm and one brick of .22 long rifle. So, I'd have to venture the opinion that the ammo shortage is still going strong.

But if I ever decide to get a gun that fires 7mm rounds, I'll be good to go as far as ammo availability is concerned. :scrutiny:

I've had no trouble getting 7.62x54R, FMJ or soft point. Sure it's between $.70 and $.85 per round of commercial, but it's readily available by me.

The shortage may be over "soon", but just think of how insane the next shortage is going to be after the next crazy crime involving firearms.

It is like fire season out there -- the smallest ember is going to re-kindle the wildfire that was just brought (mostly) under control.
