Whats a inexpensive reliable short barrel single shot 12ga

Pretty much and single shot shotgun is very easy to 'takedown'.

H&R pretty much owns this market niche. I owned one. The break lever is thumb-down, better than sideways lever in most doubles.

H&R is my vote; had a 10ga that was a hoot to shoot and built like a tank.

Another H&R fan, their so light and easy to carry, but I'm sure you know that! I love mine, its my lightweight woods gun.

I've got a Rossi Single 12 Gauge, I hacked down barrel to 20", added a pic rail on the forearm, and bought a sling.

The whole gun is only 5 or so pounds. Don't run anything higher than low recoil 00 buck though. It's a painful learning experience.

Just about any single shot you'd find will do the job. I don't even know who makes them anymore, but I'd go to the used rack and look for one. I've only owned one and that was an Ithaca M-66. Good gun if you can find one. If you find one with a "house brand" like Sears, or Revelation, don't be afraid to buy it.

As others have mentioned, H&R is pretty much all that's left for a U.S.A. produced single shot shotgun. I have one in 20 guage. It's a good gun. Last I looked new prices were under $200. I'm thinking about another in 12 guage.

H&R/NEF is probably the most common and popular choice.Good solid,no frills shotty for the masses.Put a decent recoil pad on it,their light weight can produce some stout recoil for many.

The H&R's do not break down easily without tools and kick like a mule

Check some pawn shops around your area, I'm certain you'll find an inexpensive one that will prove very serviceable.

The 88 is a nice shotgun. Equal to the 500 IMO.

Jumbojim.... I'm considering the 88 too but for different purposes. Ive never owned a pump before so I think I'm going to cut my teeth on an 88 for my 1st pump. I actually prefer the safety on the trigger guard like the 88 has so that's a + for me.

I really like mine. The action has never failed me and the more you use it the slicker it gets. The only trouble ive ever had with it is if you have the gun tilted sidways on its axis when you're cocking it. Sometime the shell will fall right out of the extraction port. Im pretty sure other guns do this too.... kinda goes to show, you need to keep it upright.

Either of the Topper Junior models in 20 gauge would likely work well out of the box. They have a 22" factory barrel and weigh in at between 5 and 6 pounds.

The one that lives here is an older one, it's 36 3/4" overall. The advantage with the factory barrel is that you get to keep the fixed MOD choke. If you cut down a longer barrel, you either get CYL bore or have to have choke tubes installed if you want any choke - unless you want to experiment with 'jug' choking it.

Here's my Rossi

Hacked the Barrel down to 20 inches

Added a pic rail to the forearm

Bought a sling, shell carrier, and useless scabbard

Kylon'd the furniture a nice matte olive drab.

Easy.

Unscrew the bolt on the forearm that also acts a sling mount, remove the forearm, break open the barrel and you're done.
