Around here we often talk about avoiding random acts of violence, but I was wondering does anyone have any good advice on defense against potential targeted threats from parties unknown.

I don't want to say too much specific here, because other parties involved don't want this to be public knowledge and I feel I should respect their wishes. So let me leave things as in addition to the common random threats we all face, I may face a few other not so random threats for reasons that are beyond my control. My father who passed away a couple of years ago was a district judge in this small city for a number of years, and someone unknown that blamed him for something has started sending out vague threats to other fringe parties (surviving relatives) similar to myself. (you know the type things, I know where you live, watch out I am coming for you, etc.)

On one hand I know of lot of these threats tend to come from people that are not a real threat, but I also know sometimes they are, and these days it seems we are seeing more and more that fall into the later category. And even if this one turns out to be harmless there is always going to be that next guy that gets out of prison after 20-30 years and may want revenge.

The only real advice is be prepared. There are so many outcomes and different opportunities to be attacked that you have to do your best to prepare yourself for all of them... An arduous task indeed. Situational awareness is key, Always have a plan/exit strategy. As a driver, i do this naturally, At any point in time while I'm driving im well aware of anothe rplace my car can go if it has to do so quickly without harmingmyself or others... I try to do the same with my pedestrian self as well.

i got some of that nonsense via a room mate. even after he was gone . i live in the sticks i hung game cams in particular i cover the only road in and out. i know the locals cars and if anything goes on i made the cops aware of the cam so they can check it out too. in my case i know who the threat is and they do too.
i recently did a 4 cam system with dvr and odd site backup that i can access from phone as well as a tilt pan ip cam. but those are mostly to keep an eye on kids and their friends

As I tell my wife when she's on business travels, "Beware of your surroundings, no need to stop and ogle things, just look and know where certain things are, possible folks waiting for you to make a mistake. Look over your shoulder once in awhile, act like you "belong there"! Walk with a purpose, like you know where you're at and where you're headed too.

Any guess who the threat is? You said your father was a judge so I'm assuming you think it is related to some case he presided over. Have the police been notified and if so have they supplied you with a photo of possible suspects?

Your father was a judge, WHO was in charge of the security of his court?
you should be forwarding these threats to them and working with them to identify the individual and or group.

Even if no action can be taken against them, you know who to be looking for.

Actually, consider contacting the US Marshal Service
I just remembered they run a focused MOSAIC system, thats set up to handle this sort of thing, you are defiantly going to need to work with the local police and the agency that provided your fathers security, they can ask the Marshals to evaluate the threat.

OH and besides upping your security level, I'd avoid a 'grouping of targets' esp. if the location would be known before hand, such as all threatened members attending the same church service regularly.

Thanks for the thoughts, since I have not received direct threats as yet, and those that have don't want this to be general local knowledge I don't feel right about contacting the police, although I think there may have been some off the record contact already made.

Contacting law enforcement is step one. Step two is doing what we all should do anyway, layer defenses. Home alarm with hardened entry points, and a way to defend yourself once you are made aware of the entry. Get a CCW if you don't already have one, and be mindful of your surroundings. This is not a live your life in fear, it is a everyday readiness that we should all have, relaxed alert is the term I believe.

As a retired cop I've lived for years with the possibility that some relative or associate of some guy from my past might one day show up at my door... To date I've not had a single incident -but I do stay prepared. I also make a point of noting places in any public space where a threat might come from. It's a holdover from years ago and as much habit as anything else.

Far more importantly I've lowered my profile, the only place I speak openly of such stuff is right here -nowhere else. Most of my customers have no idea of what I did years ago (I've been in another line of work since the late nineties). If you do have a threat though - make a point of briefly telling your neighbors and close associates. Extra eyes are helpful.

In addition to all the good advice given already I would recommend understanding the skill/concept of "surveillance detection" and building that skill.

Information must be gathered to successfully target an individual. That information-gathering may give some kind of sign or cue or warning that would be missed by someone who's oblivious.

Sometimes these sorts of things are not obvious but one can learn to spot them.

I live 600 miles from my former department. I more concerned with staying situationaly aware about random crazies.

If I became aware of a targeted threat - Pull out all the stops cops, friends, neighbors, formal and informal.
Be aware, prepare, win!
I didn't get to be this old doing nothing.
Sorry for sounding harsh but things like this need to be taken seriously and dealt with swiftly.

I think Saddam etc, etc. never did the same thing twice and had a few "doubles". Good luck and carry a gun.. Cooper used to personally instruct/school very top principals to carry, how to shoot, yada.

Back in Feb. of 1980 I testified against two men in a criminal trial, in which they had a whole lot to lose, and I was the only witness. A month or so before the trial began they made face to face contact with me out side the court house and warned me, that if I went through with my intention to testify, I would be sorry, and stopped. 7 days later they made an attempt to blow me up in my car with a home made bomb that malfunctioned. One week after that, a second attempt almost got me, if not for the fact that my wife and I got into a different car at the last second.

The fact that a first attempt occurred, this only fueled my determination to testify, and I did. They got nailed for the original crime, and got an additional 20 yrs. in Levenworth for the whole bombing thing, and the attempt on my life.

So if it were me, I would take some reasonable precautions, be alert and watchful of your surroundings. Watch for unusual people or cars that don't seem to have reasons for being where you are, and for individuals that may be watching you. One thing I would do is try let them get careless thus allowing you to get a plate number, or other valuable evidence, and then take it to LE. This is especially important,, because if you should end up having to use deadly force, it helps support your self defense claim.
