Hey guys, I have some 45-70 once fired mixed head stamp cases I plan on reloading. They all were fired from a H&R Springfield Trapdoor Officers Model replica. My father had 3 of these rifles in consecutive serial numbers for each of his 3 boys.

Anyway the cases measure 2.110 inches each. I wasnt planning on trimming them, but should I? LYMAN trim to length is 2.09 inches, but if my cases are consistent at 2.11 inches and I plan on shooting from my trapdoor replica do I need to trim them down?

Thanks for your input

I only size the top 0.250" of the case and then re-expand and flare the mouth just to boolit diameter, which on my gun is 0.459", then I can slip the lubed boolit into the charged case with a little hand pressure. Then I remove the flare just back to straight.

I would try them at the 2.110" .

Need to add I only shoot black powder !

Sorry, I have resized. I am asking about trim to length. My words were wrong.
You are asking the question correctly. Personally I would leave them alone for at least one more firing. I'm not totally sure those cases with lengthen since they are straight walled cases instead of bottleneck.

That is .020" above SAAMI trim too length, which typically means they are about .010" over max.. The problem with brass that exceeds max. SAAMI length is it can lead to the mouths / bullets becoming pinched in the throat upon firing, thus resulting in unpredictably and dangerously high pressures.
So yes, do trim them to the specified length, and measure them after each resizing.

you can't go wrong "playin by the rules"...trim 'em. ;) I doubt they will ever grow again! 4570's are like big ole straight wall pistol cases and aren't really subject to case growth like a necked cartridge.

According to SAAMI the max case length is 2.105" which would put his case measuring 2.110" 0.005" over. We are only talking about five one-thousands of an inch here. That little of a measurement can be read incorrectly and the OP said every single one is the same length.
