Okay so here it is. I picked up the MAK 90 yesterday. It's not stamped 386 thus it's not a Polytech. The serial number starts with 94 thus it's importation date was around that time. I broke the rifle down and cleaned it. All numbers match. Bore has mirror shine. Gas system and gas piston and bolt were dirty but shined up nicely after cleaning. What do you all think?

Is this a barrel nut or has the barrel been turned down? If it's a barrel nut what's the best way to go about getting it off?

i think you need to hurry up and order a new stock set.

Mak 90s are great though, I have one in the milled variety and love it

In the era of kit guns and the issues that come with some of those guns, a lot of folks are noting that these MAK rifles were arsenal made guns, with chrome lined barrels and are showing more appreciation for these Chinese guns. The thumbhole stocks never fit me, but I bought a couple and modified them with American made stocks (922 r and all that) so that I had a chinese AK I could shoot without using or putting wear on my now valuable pre ban AK rifles. Take care of that and it will serve you well. Another nice thing about these is the Polytech guns often had spring loaded firing pins. Some of the later Norinco guns did too, helped avoid slam fires with American ammo with softer primers, so you may want to check and see what this one has.

It didn't look spring loaded But then again I didn't play with the firing pin.

I plan to and a kvar front hand guard set and gas piston. I've already got a Hogue grip. I'm thinking about a, bone steel folder.

Enjoy it, those are good shooters, I just converted mine a few months ago and am really happy with the conversion.

Mak-90

I inherited one a few weeks ago, no magazines though.
I borrowed some mags and ammo from a buddy, great trigger, accuracy was so-so with
steel cased Russian ammo, (3" @ 50 yds and 6-10"@ 100 yds) 10 round groups.
All shooting was done off hand with no sling, but I do believe the gun was never fired before.
Hopefully the more we shoot it, the better it will get. Need to take some pics.

Cool,

Keep us posted in how it goes.

I would assume the dumbhole stock is NATO spec?

NATO spec in what way? I don't know of any relationship that NORINCO has to NATO.

The stock is that way because the MAK-90 (the "Modified AK 1990") was specifically designed to skirt the sporting purposes clause of the 1989 import ban.

Love me some MAK90:

How much fitting was required on the kvar hardware

The furniture is Ultimak. I did have to do some grinding on it. I used a bench grinder for the gross reductions and then a bastard file for the final fitting. So worth it, though, don't you think?

I would prefer the kvar. Was yours NATO length or Warsaw length stock? I looked at the pic again. The od bottom handguard looks exactly the kvar one as does the butt stock.

If only they didn't have the weird cut on the reciever...
No hate here. A good gun's a good gun, and the Chinese make surprisingly good ones.

I can't chip in much except to say that it doesn't appear to have a barrel nut. Just a bare, unthreaded portion of barrel. If you really want, and your state doesn't have any odd laws against it, you could either be handy or find a friend with tools to add a detent pin and thread the barrel.

Or go the easy route and get one of those pin-on brakes and not modify it.

Standard (not NATO) length stock.

I got lucky, my receiver was square cut. Only stocks I could find for an angle cut MAK90 were ironwooddesigns.com wood stocks, which are nice, but pricey. I wanted to keep this rifle pretty simple.

Detent pin? You can't just thread the barrel and screw the hider/brake on? Mine has the straight cut receiver not the slant cut.

You can--I did on my Saiga for a while--but AK's don't use crush washers like AR's do. The usual means it to leave the brake with just a little 'wiggle' to it, and the detent pin keeps it from rotating or wobbling loose.

Toss a washer on there and it works just fine.

What about one of, those 1/2x28 adapters, that allows the use of 14x1 hiders?

Cool,

So if I decide I want to add a hider I've got someone that can ream a .223 hider out to .30 caliber for 15.00. I reckon that's a good deal?
