AR's - Windham?

To the OP?

Mebbe it's just me, but it appears the cheapest Milspec rifle I can purchase (and part of the reason I bought my last one) is the Colt.

I'm sure BCM and Daniel Defense make good stuff (my BCG spare parts pack is from BCM), but when I whip by their sites it seems that instead of the $100 / $200 more expensive some folks claim they are, darn if they don't seem to be around 33 to 50% higher than a good price on the Colt!?

I always figured the reason the Colt was cheaper was their economy of scale?
I think for the last few months BCM's prices have been jacked up a little because they are donating everything over their normal prices to the NRA to help fight the BS legislation that has been going on. I don't know much about DD rifles other than they're supposed to be high quality.

BCM has jacked their prices up a little bit but everything you pay over the standard amount goes directly to the NRA as a donation. They started doing this to combat the idiots buying up all of the stock and reselling it online at a higher price. They figured raising their prices a little bit would make it less desirable for the Gun Broker Gougers.

Well I just swung by BCM to do a little competitive pricing (been a while).
They currently show all guns out of stock, and I didn't see any prices.

What do you all think of red dot sights vs. irons/other optics?

That's an entire forum unto itself.

Question the first: For what use?
Question the second: How much money are you willing to spend?

The sighting setup on my Colt (scope, mount, and backup rear sight) was about $1,100. And quite a few guys have optics on their carbines that cost two or three times that. Sometimes even more.

Worry about optics after you decide on your rifle. If you want a Red Dot which is the most popular carbine optic, you can spend anywhere from $75 to $1000 for one but trust me when I say this.....You get what you pay for. If you want a RDS just for shooting dirt then a Sparc or Primary Arms will do. If you want something that is battle tested and will withstand extreme amounts of shock or forces of nature then you're going to have to spring for a Aimpoint or and Eotech. Each has their advantages but I prefer Aimpoints just because I am a self proclaimed Doomsday Prepper. Aimpoint Red Dots make great optics for SHTF scenarios due to them being able to last 5+ years on a single battery and that's keeping it on all of the time. Also, if you want to use your carbine for home defense, you can just leave your red dot on instead of trying to fumble around with a power switch in the heat of the moment.

You can find an Aimpoint Pro for about $375 and they come with a mount although I prefer American Defense mounts which is another added cost of over $100.

Spikes is another company I wouldn't mind buying a rifle from. They use good parts and their QC is good as well. Since they're a small shop it takes a little longer for them to get complete rifles in stock. I have one of their Zombie lowers just because I like Zombies but I don't like their spider logo. Like someone else said, it looks to much like dueling dongs. Spikes also makes a great buffer and buffer tube kit. I love their buffers filled with tungsten powder...

I also like Spikes, especially their uppers since they use FN barrels. Again, not a fan of their "DD" rollmark but fortunately you can use a different stripped lower.

And I like PSA... last year I used their upper with a FN 16" midlength barrel, BCM BCG and MBUS2 rear flip up on my own stripped lower built up with PSA's $80 LBK (12 Days of Christmas sale). Throw in a sling and PMAG and it came in a little over $700 for a milspec AR that humbles the Sports and Sprouts and Windhams out there! :p

Kinda of funny how the entire discussion content here - has absolutely nothing to do with the "subject title" of this thread.

Just sayin....

Maybe because the thread creator started asking different questions that had nothing to do with his original?

Not that I care the thread creator was asking different questions. Personally I think it's good. It keeps from the forum being junked up by pointless threads.

Well said.

Threads evolve and progress, just like conversations in real life.

That's the way it is.
