I am starting to think about buying a polymer framed, striker fired double stack pistol in 9mm Parabellum. I plan to use it as a range gun for target shooting.

I have done some research and narrowed it down to the S&W M&P9, Ruger SR9, and FNH FNS9.

I have found plenty of discussions on the SR9 and M&P9 but not much on the FNS9. I handled one in a gun store and liked it. It seems to point well and was solid. What have been your experiences with the FNS9?

hope this helps

hey, i'm going to start out by saying the fnS (s for striker fired) is a good polymer framed handgun. It's 3rd only behind glock (which i know wasn't on your list) and M&P. While i know a lot of big name guys were using the M&P, but it seems like with stock parts i've seen a lot of them go down to to mechanical failures. I was invited to an FNH showing of the FNS. I do like and enjoy shooting the gun. It has an awesome stock trigger pull and really good reset, and i mean REALLY good. I consider it a duty pistol for sure. If glocks don't fit your hand, i think it's a great pick up.

I have an fns 40 and its a very very good solid gun, accurate and extremely reliable
easy to take down for cleaning, comes with 3 mags, I have never been disappointed
at all with it, buts that me

FN makes nice handguns, but......

Magazines, holsters, sights, etc. are more difficult to come by then say a Glock, XD, M&P, etc.

And customer service (I live 30 miles from their service center) is fine, but there is no "custom shop" to be had - they won't tweak a thing. Just food for thought....

^ The SAD part . . . is that other guns are more popular, thus these accessories are harder to find for the FNS-9. But I will tell you, after shooting several striker fired guns, that the FNS-9 is definitely NOT "least among them". I've shot a Glock with an improved trigger, yet liked the trigger on my FNS-9 better. Not just the pull, but the actual FEEL of the trigger itself.

You won't go wrong with it.

I'm considering selling mine ONLY because I'm more of a hammer fired pistol guy, and just wanted to try one out. As striker fired pistols go, it has been my favorite.

Good luck in your decision.

I love my FNS. Great ergos, nice sights, good capacity, and mine's been 100% reliable with any ammo I've fed it.

It's a good gun, but aftermarket is darn near nonexistent. That keeps me from getting one.

allaroundhunter, . . . that's the reason people get stuck with pistols they MAY not actually like, . . because of "aftermarket parts". It keeps good guns out of the hands of people who would normally buy them. . . . which would facilitate them having more "aftermarket parts" then. It's a catch22.

parts

while i believe that it may be hard to find aftermarket parts for this firearm. look at the manufacture. fnh scars are one of the hardest guns to find mags for. i don't think that's anyones fault but there own.

I recently bought an FNS-40, and I love it. I was scared to take the .40S&W leap because of the snappiness of the round. I'm not recoil shy, but I wasn't looking to be punished.

The low bore and the egos make this one of the most comfortable full sized pistols I own. Besides the report, I really don't notice much difference firing the .40 over the 9mm.

I really like the feel and performance of the FNS-40. I like it enough to have made it my go-to HD pistol for the time being.

The reason there isn't as much aftermarket support is because FN has been releasing a new pistol every 2-3 years. It doesn't give the aftermarket time to catch up before there is a new variant that they have to tool up for.

Does this mean that it will be harder to buy magazines for it in a few years? Is it because these models don't sell well?

Whatever the reasons are, . . . I see nothing wrong with FNH pistols. Companies just want people to be funneled into a specific lot so they can make money easier [in other words, not having to tool up for as many pistols]. The consumer obliges.

But I tend to go the other way. If that means having to be stuck with a generic holster [and factory mags], then so be it.

I can't say for sure. But I will tell you that I would expect it to be easier to get Glock and M&P mags than mags for any currently made FN pistol here in a few years... Unless the current atmosphere continues where it is impossible to find a decently priced M&P9 magazine...

I don't like using generic holsters. I want my holster to be made for my specific gun, because that is always a safer bet. A "universal" holster isn't fitted to any specific firearm and therefore can have material sneak into a trigger guard or inadvertently bump a safety which are both high enough on my no-no list to avoid them entirely.

Highly under rated pistol. Downsides already mentioned. About impossible to find mags and mega expensive, but ya get 3 with the gun so.

Holsters are lacking, but they are out there. Accessories are non existant. That aside id keep mine over my glock, because its that good of a gun.....and I love my glock.

I would wait for Zastava plastic framed offering. It will come from Serbia through EAA so it should be less expensive. The price of FNH alone would lead me to look someplace else.

And I would completely avoid this. The FN might be pricey (though not too bad at all, IMO), but it is a high quality gun. I would not buy an imported pistol that is less known and that has an even smaller aftermarket over one....ever.

Zastava may not be well known here, but have a longer history than most and are very good quality. Worth looking into!

As far as the FNS, it seems to be a great pistol also.

I would recommend HS/XD series high quality, proven and has a big aftermarket support... Now if you want a US made pistol than get a M&P also a proven design.

This year Zastava is celebrating 160th anniversary (1853). the reason why Zastava is not better known in the US has to do with nineties embargo on Yugoslavia and the bombing of Zastava plant, but also Zastava is/was primarily military oriented while civilian market was secondary.....

BTW largest military fair in this part of Europe "Partner 2013" is in 3 days (25-28) Zastava will probably exhibit the new polymer pistol.
