I am finishing up my self made AR lower this weekend (hopefully). I am going to put the LPK in it sometime next week after that and check it for function.

I am wanting to build an SBR upper for it and need to do the paperwork. Anything special I should do/need to know since it is not going to have a serial number?

Thanks all.

Yes. You will have to assign it a serial number of some sort before you can submit your Form 1. Without a serial number it will be rejected. You can give it any combination of numbers and letters you like.

Very good, I was assuming that but don't like to assume with the Fed. Is there a guideline of how it has to be put on the lower? I.E. laser etched, engraved, separate plate, etc? Position? SIze?

It must be clearly visible on the lower. The engraving must be at least .003" deep, and 1/16 tall. No spaces, but you may use a dash. Must be at least one number in the S/N.

You will also need your name, city, state, model, and caliber on it as well. You'll need all of this for the Form 1. Once you do it, you cannot make any other firearm with that same S/N, so if you form 1 a can later or something, you'll need all the same info on it, but you'll need to change the SN by at least one number/letter.

I don't think that is correct so long as it is a DIFFERENT weapon/item. Otherwise, manufacturers would have to maintain an unmanageable list of serial numbers so nothing was repeated. You could not 'make' two SBRs with the same serial number, but I can't see a reason for having to create a completely different number for the can.

Of course, that is just my opinion; I could be wrong. NFA branch could give you a more definitive answer.

i would think that the suppressor and SBR you Form 1'd would have to have different serial numbers since everything else on them is the same.

im sure there are duplicate serial numbers all over the place between all the different manufactures, but that's where similarities end since its a different manufacturer name and city/state.

suppressors are considered firearms by the ATF and therefore you would have two "firearms" with identical identifying information, though they are of different "type".

I have one suppressor that I built that has the same ser# as the machinegun it goes on but I only made one of them so not quite the same argument.
