I purchased a D.D. M4 V7 And since it is a flat-top and a midlength I was thinking of doing something a bit different.
I already have a nice AR with a trijicon reflex, I was thinking more on the line of a more conventional scope.
Also; BUIS? I have MagPul's on my other AR and would just like several opinions on some other models.

The gun will most likely be a range toy, and 'yote gun but I'm considering begining to shoot 3 gun.

before you buy anything, find someone with a vortex 1-6x HD to look through. it's even better than my swaro z6i 1-6x and half the money. i'm a big fan already.

If I had the money that's what I would get. I would also look at the Viper PST 1-4x24, it is closer to my budget.

I'd highly suggest some Vortex optics. My buddy has a couple 1-4x and they are a great scope for the money.

As for BUIS, I would suggest a set of Troy's. They are pricey but worth the money if you want something durable. I have both the di-optic and regular style rear apertures. The dioptic really "ghosts" out when you are using it. You can barely see it (at least for me).

I like Diamond Head iron sights.

I like Aimpoint PRO for red dot.

The jury is still out on magnified optics on AR's for me. Unless you are hunting, no need IMHO.

I prefer a Red Dot as well. That being said, magnified optics are also good on AR's. Especially if you want to do a precision build.

I have one of the Gen 1 Razor HD 1-4x24 scopes and I really like it. The glass is of excellent quality, it holds zero/tracks well, and it's tough as nails. The one downside is it's quite heavy. With the LaRue SPR 1.93 mount I have it in, it can be removed from the rifle and reattached, maintaining perfect zero.

I have owned several ACOG's, and while I do think they are a good sight (lightweight and durable), they are not as versatile as a modern 1-4 or 1-6 power scope. The design of the ACOG is good, but IMHO, somewhat dated.

I really like the Burris TAC30 1-4x. You can find them on eBay for well under $300. Their Phillipine-made glass is as good as the Vortex Viper PST, it has a better reticle for that type of scope, and the illumination is daylight visible. It is a great buy.

For a rear sight, the king of the hill is the KAC 2-600m flip up rear. It is fully adjustable for both windage and elevation in MOA-increments clicks, just like the carry handle sight, yet it folds. Nothing else comes close. A couple of my buddies used them in Afghanistan, and they love them too.

If you're running a Red Dot with lower 1/3rd co witness then a Daniel Defense fixed rear sight all the way. We just swapped all of our rifles with red dots from Troy Folders to the DD fixed BUIS. It made perfect sense when you think about it. Being that the red dot is sitting at a lower 1/3rd you're rear sight stays out of sight since you are looking over it. If your optics go down, a quick drop in cheek weld gets you aiming straight down your irons. It takes fractions of a second to drop your cheek weld. We found this superior to having to worry about flipping the rear sight and then readjusting your cheek weld.

Of course this set up would not perform well with magnified optics but I will never again run a flip down rear BUIS with any future setups involving red dots.

The scopes that Taliv mentioned are great options. A little cheaper look at the nikon 1-4x scopes. I am very happy with my nikon monarch african.

My AR uses a cheap KonusPro 1.5-5 shotgun scope (7249). I have five of these scopes mounted on different rifles, my 20ga and muzzleloader. only one failure that even a Trijicon wouldn't have survived. I love the reticle, the power is perfect for quick and precision (reasonable range say sub 400) in both field and tactical environments. I would put it on my service M-4 any day and trust it.

For the price point and what you get back it is a great piece to try. I know a couple guys who tried mine and sold their higher dollar scopes to put one on and bought ammo with the difference. they still use them and love them too.

yep, but it's shorter and lighter than the very popular swaro z6i
The Razor HD is a fair bit shorter (about 1.5" I believe), but it is 5 oz heavier at 20oz for the Gen I, the Gen II is 25oz, about 10 oz heavier than the Swarovski Z6i 1-6x24, which is 15.5oz (unless I'm missing something and am looking at the wrong product).

Primary Arms sells the Burris Tac-30 with a mount for $280. The combo fits nicely over the Troy flip-ups I've got. The scope and mount are pretty heavy though, 1.5 lbs. on my scale. The scope is nice and clear, the mount seems pretty well made for what I'm guessing is a Chinese product.

I use different optics for different ranges. I don't have any use for iron sights. If I'm trying to make a head shot on a crow at 300 yds, a 4x scope won't do me much good. ;)

wow, i stand corrected.

mine feels much lighter than 2 lbs. they must have left some parts out of mine :)

My V7 wears a 2-7X Fullfield with a German #5 reticle in a Nikon fixed mount and I am pleased. Nice and compact with all of the power I need. No BUIS on this one but my other AR, a PSA carbine, is set up with a KAC 600 Micro with the standard F marked front sight using a mid-size bead from KNS. Pleased as well.
