Chewing the fat at the LGS, about aiming

The misinformation and B.S. at a gun shop are rivaled only by the idiot politicians who try passing more gun legislation!

The only time I don't use my sights is when I am firing from retention.

Chambered or not? Depends on your level of training. I often carry in a fanny pack, which is probably just as much of a handicap as carrying without a round chambered. Whatever you do, train to be able to deal with it.

That's funny because you can read stories of gun fights where the shooter reports seeing his pistol sights as sharper and clearer than he ever remembered. Cirillo said that, IIRC and I've seen others.

BTW, that's because with focused attention - you allocate more processing power to your parvocellular visual system which is responsible for focused, high spatial frequency detail components of the visual scene.

Work stuff intrudes into the gun stuff.

BSA, how does one get 40 yrs of gun fighting experience.
40 years worth is pretty tough, but you can find people who have had a lot of gunfighting experience and are willing to share. Jim Cirillo is one such person. Cirillo, by the way not only advocated using the sights but also specifically remembered using his sights in shooting encounters.

He believed that a dedicated training regime, including competition and hunting helped develop habits (including using the sights) that would carry over even into extreme high-stress/high-intensity situations like gunfights.
...not one of us use their sights.
I sometimes find myself not using my sights. I can tell when I'm not because I start missing more than I'd like. ;)

I passed by my local gun shop today and we started talking guns, "what else".

I sometimes swing by and give them an ear full of stuff I read about in my girlfriends knitting magazines...

They give me a "meh?? mmmm...kkkay look" it's priceless... then I actually buy something and get out of their hair. :D

Please provide some practice techniques (unless that too has been discussed already).

Just stand in front of the target (paper) and shoot from the hip, or shoot as usual but without the sights? Seems like the idea is to be able to hit body mass without using the sights, so just practice rapid fire without aiming from a position that one would guess they would shoot from if needed in a fast approaching defensive situation. I use to practice while backing up as fast as I could (aka running away). I figured that is what I would be doing if possible, but I was using sights. I start worrying about not hitting the bad guy (and something else instead) if I am not aiming. Seems there is a balancing that must occur between 'spray and pray' and aiming.

pointing the gun is usually not the hard part. pulling the trigger on a defensive pistol without changing where the gun is pointed is the challenge, particularly with stressors.

inside 6' i prob wouldn't use my sights either.

there are training classes that teach this sort of thing. heck, several years ago one of the mods here invited a teacher and hosted a point shooting class that several of us attended.

Yes, I agree, I am probably stating the obvious but I suppose that is the idea, to practice shooting without aiming using the sight and seeing or getting a feel for where the shot hits. Makes sense to practice this. I typically shoot slow at a greater distance when at the range. My first line of defense would be to get the heck away from there, but not so much if in ones house or with family.
