So I've got a question about the SKS rifle. Right now they go for $300-500. Is this because of the demand for rifles in the more available and inexpensive 7.62x39? and if so will the price drop once .223 and other calibers become more available or will it stay in this price range?

As with most other mil-surps, as the supply dried up the rifles went up in price. A few years ago when everybody was selling them you could find some very nice examples for $100.

I dropped $400 on a unfired Norinco back in November. It was in excellent condition. I have no regrets.

depends some of the more uncommon ones were already towards $500 price point but yes mostly because of the supply drying up of them.

I got my Yugo 59/66 in February 08 for $245 otd. I watched for about 3 years and prices on them stayed about the same. Only in the past 8-9 months have I started to see prices rise around here.

You might see them priced at 500 right now, but unless someone is still in paranoid over-reaction mode, you won't see them selling for that. When you can get a S&W Sport Ar15 for under 700 dollars, a 500 dollar SKS is not a good deal. As a rifle, they are worth 250-350. Maybe 400 if it is a really nice specimen, but beyond that, add a couple hundred and get a newer Mini14 or AR.

Of course, I'm writing this as someone who bought his SKS (Russian) for 79 dollars several decades ago. Now THAT was a good deal.

Back in March 2008, many starting prices asked by sellers on Gunbroker were already $300, with some at $270.
In our gun shows in late '09-'11, nice original Russians with matching bolts/actions already listed for $400-450.

Considering the various elections and multiple mass tragedies in the US since then, many of today's prices seem reasonable.
The SKS just isn't what many people consider cool, but isn't that a fortunate situation for this high-value rifle?
I thank my lucky stars that the ARs and some AKs are the "Katy Perrys"/"Maria Sharipovas" of the US gun world.

A friend recently sold his Norinco for $300.

I remember in the early '90's buying SKS rifles for $60 to $70 each. Gunshops had crates of them. I still have the 2 I bought back then.

I still think that even with prices as high as they are, an SKS is a great value. You are gettine a very rugged and reliable autoloader in a cartridge well-suited for self-defense or light hunting. I'm not saying it will better than an AR for everyone in every situation, but it can do the same jobs. Of course I wish you could still get two and a pile of ammo for the current price of one, but it's still a serious bargain.

Value of a milled and unfired Norinco SKS in new condition ?

Read the post on this thread and it made me curious.
What would my milled Norinco that is unfired and appears new be worth.
Wood is also excellent. I bought it around 1991 or 1992 as I remember.
I also bought three others at the time one of them being a paratrooper
model and remember paying a premium or extra anyway for the milled
Norinco SKS. Any ideas would be appreciated.
