I traded for a Win M70 in 7Mag. I want to rebarrel it in .338 Lapua. Will this work? Will the bolt need to be replaced? Will the rifle handle the pressure? :what: Thanks in advance.

The rim diameter of a 7mm Rem Mag is .511" and the 338 Lapua Mag is .590". While far from an expert on this I don't know that opening the bolt face about .079" would be possible, that is quite a bit. You really need the opinion of a competent smith on that note. I am not sure what you can get away with on the Winchester bolt.

This thread would maybe fare better in the gunsmithing section of the forums.

The bolt face is wrong. The mag is wrong. This is not viable. Rebarrel to 257 Weatherby Mag or 338 Win Mag or leave it the heck alone.

The time to see if such projects are workable is BEFORE the trade.....as what you want to do is basically impossible...

I didn't trade for the gun with the intention to convert it to .338 LM., I am just exploring ideas at this point.

A Remington 700 can be converted to the Lapua round with moderate difficulty. I don't think the M-70 could be. The bolt face would be a major job. Then would come the magazine, follower, etc.
if you want a high intensity 338 round, the 338RUM is very close ballistically and uses the belted magnum bolt face.
