I finally broke down and bought another AR. Due to my son's health I sold every firearm I owned a few years ago but things as always have gotten better. I had a choice of 3 new rifles to choose from the M&P Sport, Windam carbon fiber model, and a Delton. All flat tops and carbines.
I haven't really looked until I was able to buy and the Windham really stuck out. I have had carbon 15's pre Bushmaster and Bushmaster but the Windham seemed less refined to me. The mag well was bulky reminded me of the old cast receivers. The upper around th FA seemed bulky as well so I had to walk away from it.
The Delton was clean simple and just what you expect when looking at an AR. The fit and finfinish were well and I really did like the logo work on the receiver but no rear sight included.
The M&P Sport very tight nice finish and magul rear sight. I was thrown by the lack of dust cover, FA and permanent trigger guard. This is also the 1:9 barrel not unfortunately the 1:8. In the end I had to go with the M&P it just seemed to be a better value all around for under $700.
I am sure many are going to throw me some hate for saying I feel the M&P seemed to be a better buy. I just thought to post my opinion on the 3 rifles for anyone considering to possibly buy or order one without being able to handle first. I do think all 3 are solid guns by handling them and each has a place to people's tastes.

Yep hear good things about the sport, so it sounds like a good choice to me.

I am glad things are looking up for you. The needs of family always come first.

The S&W rifles have always gotten great reviews around here and I am sure you will be happy with it. One of my AR rifles is lacking a dust cover but it shoots just fine. I make it a point not to drag that one through the desert. :)

Enjoy the new rifle!

Thanks eveyone, I owned an M&P long time ago and never had problems, one reason I went back with one. I was going to try and build but I didn't see the point at the pricing. Besides living in north Alabama the dust cover isn't an issue and I don't think I have ever used the FA.

The sport is probably the best of the bunch. As long as the bolt is closed it's a sealed system and some dust isn't going to stop it. The fa shouldn't even be used unless you are one of those people who have to ride the charging handle. Plus the money you saved you can spend on ammo.

FA to close the bolt quietly.

I heard that argument once and it seemed a good reason for the FA.

That being said, I agree it is not a must have for most.

if the military gets a new rifle AR's will be in 55 gal drums at gun store for 100 bucks lol

I have a M&P Sport and have no complaints. It shoots very well with bulk 55gr Hornady's.
I am glad things are getting better for you.

Of the three choices, the S&W is by far the best choice. I have a dust cover on my ARs but I always forget to close them. Training will fix that, of course. I have never had a problem because the dust cover wasn't used.

A forward assist can come in handy in limited situations but it's not needed. Only time I've used one was when I wanted to load the rifle silently and when doing a press check to make sure the chamber was loaded. There are other ways, just as sure, to check.

I would prefer a 1:8 or 1:7 barrel but I had a 20" with a 1:9 back in the day that shot very well.

S&W makes a surprisingly good AR. Hope your son's health is well enough to take him shooting with you

Absolutely nothing wrong with the S&W AR-15, and besides it is completely made here in the good ole USA as far as I know. Glad to hear your son is doing much better and things are looking up.

If it's going to be a safe queen or a range tool there is nothing wrong with not having a dust cover. Almost bought a M&P Sport but decided to build my own for my first rifle. I still want to get one just for fun though. Let us all know how it shoots!

Considering the three choices, if I had to choose one, I would have gone with the S&W as well.

I think you definitely made the right choice with the M&P Sport. I have owned one before and they are fantastic rifles for the price, and made by a reputable American company.

I never had the need for the dust cover. Having a FA is nice, but not needed in a civilian rifle 99% of the time.

Have fun and happy shooting!

Finally got to shoot it and nothing but good to say. Didn't shoot far of maybe 50 yards at coke cans which works for me, on my land longest shot for deer which here they aren't very big is pushing 75. It did as described great with 55 and 62 grains. Did have to push the bolt forward once with my thumb as I probably didn't rack the charging handle hard enough or just tight from factory.
I think it is more acurate than my last M&P but I'm sure it is due to the sight system. My previous had detachable carry instead of Magpul rear. It also has a better fit upper to lower than my previous. I have to say from my experience and others the M&P line up has gotten better and better with age, as well as the acquisition of Tompson Center. I could be wrong and please feel free to let me know but I think S&W got the entry level AR right.

I'll be picking up a Sport sometime in the winter. This thread reaffirms my choice and I cannot wait.

Going to throw on some Magpul furniture in OD and a MI hand guard in OD to make it extra special.
