Congratulations. You have been selected to be a member of an exploratory expedition to a hidden wonderland high in the mountains of Continent X, hidden by a dense canopy of forest. The way in is so perilous that you can only make it in on foot, carrying your absolute necessities for travel. You will be resupplied by air drop when you find an opening, supposed to be in a high valley. Previous expeditions have all disappeared without a trace. You do not know anything of the people or animals who may be waiting for you.

Question: You are allowed a single long gun and a sidearm. A gunsmith hired by the backers of the expedition will put together anything you want, NFA, Class 3, you name it. What would you take up the mountain with you, understanding that they will drop whatever else you might need when you get to the top...whenever that is?

I'll start:
Rifle: In the style of the AK 102 carbine, based on a Saiga receiver in .30-06, rebuilt to resemble military AK specifications as closely as possible. Heavy barrel, length calculated for average velocity. Krinkov-style flash hider with internal muzzle brake. Ultra-light stocks. locking, folding buttstock. High-intensity weapon-mounted flashlight. American style selector switch (S,F,B). Dragunov scope mount with quick detach. Non-electric 1x optic, optional. XS sights. Beta mag standard, regular mag backup. Internal recoil reducers. Wolf springs. Butt pad. Tactical Sling.

Sidearm: Glock 20, ported, full capacity magazine.

A short, lightweight, 3 1/2"12 gauge magnum assault shotgun with shot shells, 00 buck shells and slugs, and a 38 super with 2) high capacity magazines loaded with the nastiest hollowpoint loads I could find. My 12 gauge would be loaded with the first 2 rounds of 00 buck, the rest of the rounds would be slugs. The shot shells would be for small game food if I ran out of previsions.

I would have 10 shotgun cartridges of each kind to carry.

That would supply food, and personal protection, from about anything. I would want to travel as light as I could with my first priority on my 12 gauge but my pistol and magazines would be in a level 2 retention holster on my belt so it stays with me no matter what else I would loose if I fell or were attacked by something.

a lot to think about, but I think that's what I would take.

Something that works well and is familiar. (Glock and AR15 would be most likely. Fast, simple, reliable. However, in a nod to longstanding THR tradition I do have to answer Howdah Pistol!)

No real reason to pick one gun over another. As usual, the real issues aren't hardware questions at all. "What gun?" isn't going to matter at all to your chances of survival and success. (Unless you choose something really absurd.)

Novices argue hardware. Amateurs argue strategy. Professionals argue logistics.

I like this...

In fantasy land, a ray-gun; in the real world, I'll take my Bible and what won the West...

A proper expedition rifle of course.

A 9.3x74 chambered Krieghoff double barrel should do.

No one else has been heard from again? Make mine an SBR in case I'm my own intended target, re supply me with a pair of board shorts and some Coppertone if I find Shangri-La. And beef jerky...never forget the beef jerky.

Seems like a scout rifle might excel in this situation. Sidearm would be single action in .45 Colt just for style points. Or maybe a 4" .357. Mainly cause I own examples of both of those. Not the scout rifle, though.

Since we're kinda borderline fantasy here, I could point out an iconic movie hero that went into these type situations with nothing but a big bore revolver, an occasional 9mm backup and a bullwhip. Just sayin'.

I'll play.

Remington model 70 in 30-06, and a Smith and Wesson model 586 .357 mag. As I understand the OP, it's an expedition, not a war.

M14 (full auto, naturally, but with the assumption that I will be using it semi-auto most of the time)
Ruger Super Redhawk .454 Casull. Ported 6" barrel.

couple of extra magazines for the M14
couple of speedloaders for the Ruger (they make them, right?)

Good retention in a quality holster (I like leather, but if in a humid environment, might have to sacrifice and get some modern material)

High quality ammunition for both expansion and penetration, different bullets if necessary, but loaded alternately in the magazines.

GOOD earplugs in case I need to use the revolver.

What if the forest was crawling with ZOMBIES?

What gun would you want?

Would this thread still be open?
Seriously, I dont see why a fantasy thread like this is allowed to stay open if zombie threads are routinely closed.

Long Gun: Select fire, fixed stock HK G3 rifle with Safe/Semi/Burst firing modes. No scope, only iron sights.
Handgun: S&W pre-lock M65, 4" barrel, .357 magnum. I would carry both .357 and .38 rounds for this gun.
