Shooters-
Yep I am a NEWBY- Here anyways... but here's why I joined in> looking for some details on optimizing .308 (yes 7.62 x 51 too) to particular bbl lengths.
We can all jump in and throw pet recipes in here but that stuff is all over the Net already... (and advice like that is worth zactly what we paid for it)... I need some WISDOM 'bout a charge & bbl length correlation... Yep, I've read the books, put in the time on the range and LOVE tweaking good loads into better ones but I cannot for the life of me find reliable threads on charge & bbl lengths...
Thoughts?

Equal charge weights, few feet faster from a longer barrel, few feet slower from a shorter barrel.

And whatever powder & load gives the highest velocity in long barrel will also give the highest velocity in a short barrel..

A good load is a good load, regardless of barrel length.

The whole thing is not worth pondering.

Well folks, there you have it. Short, simple and to the point. Next question?:D

I dunno RC. What about factors such as optimal barrel time, or finding accuracy nodes? I mean, if the barrel is shorter or longer, won't it present a different vibrational pattern which could affect accuracy?

That poses no different set of issues than it does for finding the most accurate load for ANY rifle and the only way you can find out is range time.

Sure, it likely will matter ...somewhat... but so will the torque on the action screws, how hot the barrel is, the brand of primer, jump to the lands, etc.etc.

so, as noted above, there's no generic, easy substitute for range time.

The same powders and bullets that have proven to be accurate in .308 can do so in short or long barrels.

What is optimum in my 6.5 pound Ruger Compact might not sit well with your Remington 24" bull barreled custom stocked hybrid.

But I can probably easily work up an accurate load in either using the same components.

Mine likes H4895 and 150gr bullets.
