Whats a good wall hanger for over the fireplace?

I think an old large bore rifle from 19th century africa would make a cool mantle piece.

I keep an old British Enfield over the fire place. I picked it up several years ago at a gun show for $80 out the door. Took it home, cleaned it up and took the bolt nose off it so it could not be fired.
If someone steals it, im not out much but I dont have to worry about coming home and faceing my own gun if whoever breaks in is still there..

Not sure this counts, as it was over the woodstove, not a fireplace. Moose hunting on a river in a remote area, my buddy and I found a old trappers cabin [I mean old , built of on site wood, no plywood or 2x4s] The door was bear proofed but open to any human so we peeked inside. Guys it was like stepping into 1925. WW1 army cot in the corner, table set with old enameled dish ware, shelves stocked with dry goods. And heres the relevance to this thread. Hanging upside down over the stove by its sling was a as new 1903 Springfield. The bolt was open, so I could see it was stuffed with 220 gr RN's. I did not touch it as that is taboo.

I later learned the cabin was built by a old time Alaskan [86 years old] who still hiked the 30 miles up there every fall and trapped all winter.

I know this post is jumping off topic, but that working tool of a 1903 hanging over the wood stove looked cool.

Off topic? Yeah, a little. Cool? WAY!

I doubt old Everett [I learned his name later] would know what a power bar is. Now a box of Rem-Peters 30-06 would be appreciated I'm sure.

It would have to be an 1873 trapdoor for me. Not one of the little short ones either. Has to be full length, big, impressive.

That or a flintlock. Or a Hawken.

How about a nice Oil Painting of a the Civil War Battle .. Chances are it won't get stolen or give away your gun interests to strangers, and it's a lot more interesting to look at if you get a good one. Like a or 6-8 ft. long by 4 or 5 ft. wide painting. It will also add some color to the room.

Oh, yeah. I seem to have forgotten about those. Don't do one of those little short ones though. Full length, big, impressive, like a G98 or a Turkish 93 or something like that. Maybe a bayonet too...

How could I have forgotten about a Mauser?

Of Course!

An old Amberg M98 with a tangent sight and a butcher-blade or sawback bayonet.

Warners, that's a cool pic!

jim in Anchorage, That's a very cool story! I could just picture it in my head! Kind of like the good part of a book!

Would it be wrong to throw a mousin upon the wall?
...hypothetically? Not that I would ever think about doing so...

I sure wouldn't put a foreign military rifle above my mantle. I'm an American.
I'd put a glass full of irony over my fireplace, right next to the Mosin that shot my grandpa in his Romanian chest in WWII. Its likely that a Nazi comrade helped save his life.

To all you you who seem to relish your American pride, good for you. This first-generation American citizen and US military veteran helped give you that right.

We're all foreigners. A Mosin or Arisaka has as much right in the place of "honor" over my fireplace as any American flintlock. If you wanna be politically correct, put a recurve up there and show some respect to those who we murdered to take this land for ourselves.

Not too late -- you can always go back and rekindle your own tribal alliance with Nazis. Sounds like you just need to pretend they won.
Adios!

That's one of the great things about this free country of ours...everyone is entitled to their opinion. Put what you want over your fireplace, and enjoy it, but if you want to be "correct", recognize that even those "recurves" were used by immigrants. By the way, I don't know a single person who murdered anyone to take their land (Just like I doubt you've guarded any concentration camps or gassed any Jews...but then if you want to take responsibility for that crime that's alright with me. Again to each hist own). Interesting 1st generation perspective you got there. I reckon you've also received a recent generation "edumacation" too.

Okay, seriously...sorry for the sarcasm. I just get a little tired of self-righteous lectures from the same kind of people. I certainly don't want to cloud up an otherwise good thread.

Finally got my Man Cave WWII rifles into some gun racks instead of just leaning the guns on the fireplace. The racks can be mounted on the wall or set on the floor. Not much more than $20 or so of materials in each one.

Doug S.....Man I REALLY like the looks of that man cave of yours.

Looks like I will have a bit of a project this fall for that sunken living room complete with fireplace!

Great idea. Something by Mort Kunstler would do the trick.

It looks like the consensus is something like a muzzleloader or vintage military rifles.

A Turkish miquelet musket. Nobody would steal that ugly thing. Actually, it's not over the fireplace but over the doorway to the study. I haven't touched it in more than 20 years.
