What's your "never buy" gun?

Kel Tec. They're local and would love to support them but bought one (9mm) a few years back and it blows - it's my last resort "junk" gun now. Echo the Taurus posts (don't care if anyone worked at Beretta previously).

My Rem 700 30-06 has been VERY reliable for over 20 years and my SIG 226 and 238 have been (literally) perfect (don't have a SIG 220 so can't opine on that specific model Master - would love to hear your woes to educate myself). My Ruger revolvers (an old Speed 6 and a new GP100) have been fine, no complaints.

My only problems have been shooting friends' cheap ARs. Mostly the uppers, as the lowers are effectively made by only a couple of companies so the variance seems to come down to triggers, et al in the lowers.

Boatload of pages here - seems all of us don't like SOMETHING. Rorschach test!

Really, just anything that I can't see myself getting a ton of use out of (unless its a very well-priced and rare collector piece). I don't care as much about price, just value from a USE point of view. Sometime i may very well spend $300 on a hi-point 995 carbine, because I think I'd probably shoot thousands upon thousands of rounds through it and have a great time. $1500+ firearms are also probably out of the question for me, because I just don't think I could use/enjoy them enough to justify the investment (except for maybe a very high-quality hunting rifle someday if I ever get into hunting).

Also, 1911s. I've never really had much interest in them at all. I wouldn't mind having an authentic WWII one, but they're too expensive for me. I just prefer a double-stack 9mm for general+self-defense use.

And Desert Eagles. I think they're silly and they look silly. What's the advantage over, say, a S&W .460 or .500?

And Machine guns. Pay more money for a gun that's essentially the same as a semi-auto one that's 1/10 the price? And then drop more cash for ammo? No thanks.

I'm new here, so I know that I am going to get heat for this but - 1911 .45 ACP. Of all the guns that I am interested in, this is my least favorite.

My never buy is a Bushmaster AR-15. Bought one during the Clinton Ban and have regretted it every day.

Ruger 45s, Always had to send them back for useless 'repair'.
Norinco MAK90 and 9mm TT33 copies have been absolutely reliable.
Para Ordnance is only good for cracking walnuts.
Mini-14s have been project guns: if you want to hit the barn, go inside first.
Love the Ruger P95 9mm, awesomely reliable.
Hate that Ruger uses the public to beta test new models, witness the recalls.
Those who like shooting 357 out of 2" snubbies have issues (like pain)
Ruger and any other company selling 10 ounce 357s without a warning that it's going to hurt you.

Never held a glock.
My CZ75 is my do anything great gun.

Entertaining thread. Thanks

Well astra I have to respectfully disagree. I think it's a thread born to cause trouble. I said so before posting my choices for guns I would not buy and just as predicted I was flamed for doing it. There are 1633 posts in this thread and it's a huge pile of negativity. People seem to love slamming other people and I don't get that. Just like those that say their manhood is intact even though they don't buy a large caliber handgun. It wouldn't occur to them that some people need large caliber handguns for dealing with dangerous animals and the like. They singled out the .357 as the limit for gun size. I have a .44 magnum because they are far more effective against black bears which are crawling all over my home property and my farm. It's gotten to be a real risk just to mow the grass on the cemetery on the farm because a large group of bears bed down not more than 50 yards away from there. I've seen all kinds of signs there. I've seen bears there. A few bears wouldn't worry me too much but a group of bears with cubs in the mix is another story. You just never know what they might get in their heads. I started firing a 30.06 at the bottom of the hill where they are bedding down and one ran out and stood up to check out what I was doing. I could have shot that bear easily with that rifle but I'm not interested in killing bears and risking the wrath of the government. They turned loose 500 bears not more than 3 miles from that farm. My guess is they want them there since they went to so much trouble. So I'm taking my .44 magnum with me to cut the grass there right by where they bed down. I'll risk someone thinking I'm just macho man looking to compensate for shortcomings in other areas. Yeah that's what some people think. They would be wrong.

I just don't get wanting to be part of a flame fest. Yes I responded to another post here and argued a point but it was to show that some have actual reasons for choosing what they choose. It's a response to a pop psychology remark IMO. It's a request for respect. It's asking people to take the High Road and not interject some thinking they probably heard on tv into a discussion about firearms. This could be a valuable thread and part of it is. There are guns that should be avoided. But when someone responds to your post saying they wouldn't buy anything I liked then that's a flame, not the high road. Why did they say that? Because I like modern guns over old designs and I don't like wild fan boy opinions claiming certain guns are fantastic when they are just ordinary decent guns. I said that so people wouldn't buy the hype about certain guns and not to slam those who make the wild claims BTW.

There's nothing wrong with a Bushmaster AR. The government seems to like them since they buy them for our troops. There's nothing wrong with 1911's either. In fact many of them are made to extremely high standards and it's reflected in their ability to shoot very accurately. I'm not saying everyone needs the most accurate gun around. But some do want guns for target shooting and competitions and the 1911 is certainly a good choice for many competitions. They are very hard to beat in fact. Do people not understand that? Why put down a whole genre of guns anyway? It's like saying I don't like any trucks or something like that because there are hundreds of 1911 models around. Some are good, some are great, and some are fantastic. I sure don't get why anyone would lump them all together and put them all down.

My choices are based on personal experience. I have a keltec P32 a tiny Colt pocket 25acp and a tinier 22LR. I have a CZ97 45 acp and a Ruger 44-40. I admit I wasn't taking into account LEOs and their need for light weight coupled with power. My viewpoint was only of casual gun ownership. That is my fault for limiting myself. I really have never held a glock, I didn't say I don't like them. My mini-14 is an older one that I put in the back of the cabinet for 10 years. It truly had no accuracy. On another forum there is a thread titled "where is the hate?" Seems to be a lot here. I have friend who has sent his Kimber back three times. That sets an opposite example to those who have had no trouble with them. This isn't a flame to you or anyone else, a hodge-podge of answers had to be expected. I tried to run a gamut of differing guns and reasons. I do admit there is no reason for the para-ordnance comment. I like it, a tac-four. I hasn't worked from day one and probably never will. For every negative someone will have a positive and some will be more than follow the leader repeats.
But this is quite a thread, based on input. Flamers don't bother me, I know what I know - right or wrong. And I have been and will be wrong. But I'm not judging someone because of their choice, whether I would buy it or not. I am interested in personal experience. I hope this makes some sense to you, sometimes I screw that up too. Nothing here that I've written is personal against anyone. After all, I DO own an Astra 600. :)

Have to agree with Cee Zee on this one. I own a Ruger SBH 44 mag because of a run in with a 300 lb wild boar one day while bowhunting whitetail. I walk up and he stood up out of nowhere at maybe 15 feet. I was on foot. 25+ foot ledge to my left and not a tree bigger that 2" in diameter within 40 yards. I got lucky and after a 45+ second standoff, he walked away. I decided never again.

People will always have differing opinions. But hating on someone's gun isn't THR. If you have a HiPoint, good for you. If you have a $3,000 custom 45, that's cool too. Maybe you have a NEF single shot or a $45,000 Perazzi. The point, is that you have something. And if all you can afford is a "cheap" gun, learn it. Practice with it. I have seen guys with "cheap" guns dominate guys with guns costing 10X the price at the range. I myself have been one of those who got humbled.... by a HiPoint.

An opinion thread like this can be useful. There's thousands of years of combined knowledge on this forum. But when we start to bash other people's guns, we begin to segregate ourselves from each other. Basing an opinion of an entire manufacturer off of 1 or 2 personal accounts is asinine. Every manufacturer has junk occasionally.

My bushmaster is definitely a subpar AR IMO. The chamber scratches the crap out of my brass (even after polishing).

Anyway, I'd say the ruger mini 14 or 30 will never be in my collection

You just made my point.

Hey man! That was "my" point first. Get in line. ;) j/k

It can be useful to help weed out the Jennings and Raven brand stuff but even then there are rare exceptions when they sell a decent gun. Not often but sometimes.

BTW astra, I didn't mean to flame you either. I was just disagreeing about whether the thread is useful. There's some good info here for sure. But there's a lot of "anything that guy likes I hate" going on too. People dismiss entire classes of guns because they either don't like new guns or they don't like old guns. I personally don't see the reason some guns are so popular but I know people like nostalgia so more power to them. It just means I can sell my guns for a high price.

There aren't many guns I can't find some positive point about them.

CeeZee, I must have missed the part where you might have flamed me. Not a problem. You wrote a good piece. There was so much repetition I skipped to the end after four pages. Probably missed some good points by doing that, but this is a long thread.

I have one too. There is nothing wrong with owning one of them! I can't stand AR snobs...

Shhew. Ok. When I asked my uncle (retired LEO) about which brand to get this spring when I was going to get one and Bushmaster was one of the ones he named, so it cant be to bad I hope, unless he doesn't know anything (after 40+ years in the field).

Any Glock. They look like toy guns.

I have never understood all the "glocks are ugly" stuff you see. Glocks are not great looking (like a SAA, python, or 1911) but they are really ugly like a hipoint, neos, rhino, or that new walther. Glocks are really quite plain. Not pretty, but not ugly. If they weren't popular I doubt you would really ever hear about the looks

Thompson Auto Ordinance 1911 style pistol. Sloppy tolerances, rough finish, many failures to feed and failures to eject make it totally unreliable.

The role mark on the slide is marked wrong “.10mm”. A tenth of a mm bullet in that case would travel at mach 4!

I paid $149 NIB (using my FFL) in 1989 to get into the 10mm game. Got what I paid for.
