I have a 16GA Ithaca Hammerless SXS. The S/N is 449XXX. On the right top of the receiver is the S/N. On the Left top is a "F" above a "16". There is an engraving of a hunting dog on the side of the receiver. I know there are different grades, how can I tell what grade mine is? i.e Grade No 1, Grade No 2, etc...

Is there any scroll engraving at all on the gun? The "Field Grade" guns were made with a case-hardened receiver without scrollwork, and the engraving went up as the letter grade did. Your basic description matches up to a Flues Hammerless, made sometime between 1908 and 1926, but a lot of the early guns were actually chambered for 16 x 2 9/16" shells, so you should get the chambers measured if you plan on shooting it.

Richdelillo: You have a New Ithaca Double Model made in 1927.

The grade and gauge is usually fond stamped on the left front corner of the frame water table.

The N.I.D was manufactured in grades Field, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, and Sousa (renamed the $1000 grade after 1936).

You specimen should have external cocking indicators, which were standard on all grades until eliminated from the design in 1934.

Since the 2 3/4" 16 gauge shell was not standardized until the early 1930's, an evaluation by a competent gunsmith to determine chamber length is recommended. Using 2 3/4" shells in a short chamber creates dangerously high pressures and could damage the gun and injure the shooter or bystanders.

SDC: The is an engraving of a dog (like a pointer) over the words Ithaca Gun Co Ithaca NY. I tried to get a picture of it, but it is really faded.

Two Old Dogs: There is a letter "F" over a 16. How does this correspond to the letter grade? I have attached a photo.

Thank you both for your help!
