Om wanting to get my dad a holster for Father's Day (I know I should have done it before now). He has a G 19 that he carries in a rentention OWB holster but has recently mentioned getting an IWB for it. I want to get him something fairly basic to start with, no Crossbreeds or MTACs for now. Just something basic to get him used to IWB. I'll let him pick his own more advanced IWB later if he wants one. What is a good starter IWB holster for the G 19?

I know you said no Crossbreeds, but they're about as basic as it comes. They're literally a piece of Kydex riveted to some leather haha. I'm not sure what you mean by "advanced" IWB either, can you elaborate a little? FWIW, I think if you start him on a Crossbreed, he'll get used to it pretty quick, they're pretty comfortable and carry the weapon like a dream

I guess I mean I'm not planning on buying him a hybrid holster, maybe advanced is the wrong word. I'm planning on getting him just a leather holster of some sort with either a clip or loops. Any brand recommendations?

I may be overly cautious in this aspect, but when I'm carrying something that doesn't have an external safety (i.e. grip safety or frame/slide mounted safety), I like kydex. It's rigid and keeps its dimensions when the weapon is out of the holster, which makes re-holstering much easier, and safer IMHO. I don't know much about leather holsters, so I can't really make any recommendations from personal experience, but I have read a lot of good things about Galco

To me, Glock's (and most of their polymer friends) always seem best suited to kydex holsters. Simple, lightweight, durable.

Raven Concealment Phantom (and all the clones). If he decides that G19 is just too chunky to wear IWB, he still has a perfectly good OWB holster. http://www.ravenconcealment.com/holsters/phantom-modular-holsters/phantom-modular-holster

Leather Sparks summer special II works well.In Kydex I like the RM low rider.
I've tried the Hybirds and they do not work for me,I wish they did because they spread the weight well. But they rub me raw carring at 3:30,and cant pull off further back due to having a butt.

I've been carrying a Glock 19 in a Milt Sparks Executive's Companion leather IWB holster for over a dozen years. This holster design has really worked for me. The only downside is the wait from the time you place an order until it's built and delivered. But it is a high quality holster and well worth the wait.

I have an Executive's Companion for each of my carry guns - Glock 19, Glock 26 and Kahr PM-9.

Good luck!

The Milt Sparks Summer Special 2
Bingo! My all around first choice for IWB carry. If you have a problem with price or availablity fo the real deal from Milt Sparks, there are others making very similar holsters. I recently ordered an IWB Concealment Holster from JBP Holsters.

I really like it so far. Nice fit, good retention, smooth draw, reinforced lip to stay open for reholstering. This one has my Glock 36 in it, but the same holster is available for the Glock 19.

I like the Don Humes IWB holsters but prefer the supertuck hybrids now. The 19 is user friendly for carry in a average IWB set-up. The hybrids work beautifully for me and I normally carry more to 3. I do slide all the way back to 4 sometimes as well 3:30.

Good Luck, he will love the gift from his son!

I've own or have owned a bunch of nice holsters by some of the best. The Summer Special is right up there close to the top for comfort and concealability as far as I'm concerned. The wait can be pain for Sparks holsters but they are worth it. The good news is, last I knew, Brownells stocks the SS most of the time for 1911s and the Glock 19.

Lou Alessi was one of the very top holster smiths in the world. I haven't ordered from Alessi since he passed away but what they offer now are very proven designs.

Why does he want to go IWB? I used to carry IWB but then gave OWB a try and have never looked back. The Blade-tech Eclipse is awesome.

The only time i'll do IWB is if I need to tuck a shirt but usually I then just go pocket carry.

Well I ended up getting him a Fobus paddle for his LCP instead. I realized the G19 IWB holsters were a little out of my price range this time around.

By all means, though, please continue. He is still looking for an IWB. I'd like to have some more suggestions for him.

He already has the OWB covered and I think it's a little bulkier than he would like at times.

You can customize a nice holster for him. Check out White Hat Holsters.

+1

I tried Crossbreed. And their holsters seem too "one size fits all" type of holster. Not many ways to adjust it, make it your own. I am actually working on getting a custom Steampunk holster for the wife's Bersa through White Hat. Never saw the option for custom work from Crossbreed. Besides, I am atheist and don't care for religious symbols on my possessions.

Just received my Max Tuck from White Hat Holsters. I love it so far, after a day of wearing it I haven't noticed it at all. Retention is a little tighter than I'd like, but it is not a negative at all, just something that will be "broken in" after which I expect it to loosen up a tad and be perfect. I have even worn it with a shirt tucked in over it today and it has been great. Nothing keying off that I am carrying (with the "j clips") at all.

I'll just add a few +++ to the Milt Sparks Summer Special. I've been carrying my G19 in one for about two years and its just great - I have many alternatives, which I ignore. Its comfortable, keeps the gun in the holster and lets it go just when it should, and snaps on and off the belt easily. It doesn't want to slip around against my undershirt. You probably can get it from Brownell's with no wait.

check out Nate tactical. They are great. I have two. One for my Glock 17 and one for my bersa 380. I have worn it all day and barely known it is there. I have also worn it driving on an 8 hr. trip.
